Oh, I remember this Frontend mentors challenge, it was a bit challenging for me at first but later on it became easier. Just like you said, the filtered image was really tough to deal with but I didn't use the solution you used, I can't remember clearly (it has been 2 years) but I think I created a class that has both the background-image and the background-color (the color didn't show of course), then I also used the background-blend-mode property, and set it to multiply. That overlayed the purple color on the image
