The call I regret

in The Ink Well7 months ago

Feeling exhausted after the day's work, I got home freshened up and was ready to retire for the day when I caught sight of my sister's diary (Lolo) lying carelessly on the bed. I got up to it to have a glimpse of what it could contain then I remembered an event she tried sharing with me that happened to her two days ago but she couldn't complete it because she got a call from someone at that minute.
I opened the diary and scanned through her recent event and this is what I got:

It is really raining cats and dogs this night in the city of Lagos, Nigeria and I am just lying down on bed contemplating on how I would gather so much courage to enter school tomorrow for the trial I am to face concerning the department's money laundering that happened three months.
As the president for the department of law, I got an update about the fraudulent acts of the financial secretary early enough but I decided to turn deaf ears and blind eyes towards it because the secretary is my Bestie. One thing I have always cherished in life is protecting my relationship with my friends which is what I was doing concerning this act with my bestie, Laurie.
I was just being the nice friend who was always ready to help her friend in need so this is what I did for her. She called me earlier in the morning when I was asleep and she was crying on the phone, this made me wake up fully and I asked her what the problem was. Laurie said,"Lolo,I just want to make a confession to you, concerning the department's money which I'm holding I transferred one million naira from it to give Josh (this was her boyfriend) since he needed for a project he was working on but right now I can't reach him his phone lines are switched off and I can't reach him on any of his social media pages and I need to present the account of the money in the committee meeting in four days time ". She bursted out crying profusely.
I just sat there trying to absorb the information, then I spoke up "when did this happen?why such huge amount of money?" She was just crying then she whispered,"Three weeks ago". Being the good friend, I told her not to worry that I will help her in the meeting if asked for the money which is what I did.
Few weeks after this incident happened that I helped her with, the dean and head of department got to know about the missing money in the department. They called me to question if I knew what was going on but me being the smooth talker assured them that everything was in my control which they trusted me instantly.
I left the office feeling fulfilled that but as I got online to the department's group chat I saw a post that I was involved in the money laundering and that there was an evidence to prove it. I became confounded at the turn of events so I placed a call on Laurie to ask what was going on. Her number wasn't reachable. After the five calls I made, I saw a message from an unknown number saying "I'm so sorry bestie that I traded this our relationship just for my boyfriend, well I was trying to secure visa to travel out when I called you that morning. I was using you to buy time while it was processing. I know you feel shattered reading this but I love the way you acted when you were defending me so I believe you will be able to face the trial placed on you because I made some evidence against you. I'm sorry bestie but this traveling means alot to me. Goodbye".
I was so broken that I didn't know what to do, still in my fazed I got a call from the dean that I was going to be tried in the school court and the failure not to be present on the set day means that I will be placed on probation and I won't go for law school in the next five years (mind you, I'm in my final year). I cried so badly but I knew that I caused it.

Dear diary this is what I can't tell my parents about though I need someone to talk to, what do you think I should do? I wish I didn't pick that call.
Your owner, Lolo

After reading this diary I just laid pondering on what would happen to my sister after the trial. With that in mind I dozed off.

What a sad story.😊

Yes sometimes it happens

If she had known she would have recorded the first call and present that as evidence alongside the text message she received about the visa. It would have helped her case. Right now, she needs a very good lawyer. Good luck to her, I hope she doesn't lose.

Yeah I hope she doesn't lose it

I hope she would prove herself innocent.
Btw, story was amazing.

I hope so too. Thank you so much 🙏

I liked the way you handled the story. It was very sad what happened.
Regards @a-ima

Thank you so much

Such an unfortunate turn of events. How I wish her best friend was caught and the real truth revealed

I hope so

How did you dose off after reading such a touching story 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'll suggest she shares the chat with the school authority as a proof the she wasn't involved in the whole scam. The school can always reach out to embassies or just trace the culprit with her name etc. this is really touching. Betrayal on a different level. Nice write up well done.🤗🤗🤗

Thank you 😊 I will try my best to complete it in the next edition

Nope the story is fine.. it's just funny how you could doze off. For someone like me, I may be so worried.. you get.. I really love the story the way it is 🤗🤗🤗

I really appreciate the kind words 😊🙏
