A Day to Remember

in The Ink Well9 days ago

The past can always be remembered no matter what when something brings up the issue. I have been one of the best on the female football team in my secondary school. I had played to make my teammates as well as the school management proud. Right until this moment, my name is still glued to the school board as the best female footballer of all time. I don't know if someone has taken over that name. My school has been one of the best in the history of female football in my community.

There was a tournament that had been going on even up till this moment that we had partaken in. It is always coming up yearly, and our school has been the first to receive an invitation, being the one that had lifted the trophy several times. I managed to find my way into the team when I newly resumed school. I was not part of them in the first year. I only came in midway to the team when they were preparing for the football competition. They have been struggling to make their way to the top. For years, a school has been taking the lead, which has been on record. Although they were not able to lead on a clean sweep. No team had ever won on a clean sweep in the history of the competition.

My parents were very sure of taking me to that school, but then they warned me not to draw closer to football just because of what had happened to me as regards footballing. I had broken my left ankle, which took me several months to walk properly. It got healed, but then I was still finding it difficult to walk straight. After some months, anyway, I got healed totally, but my parents restricted me from playing football. Being female, most parents would not want their children to get involved in playing football. I tried hard to take that back, but I still struggled to sneak out to play football.

When I resumed, I was just seated, observing what they had been up to and seeing the tactics they were using. They played fantastic football but lacked finishing. This is what I can do and what I'm known for. They played friendly with a neighboring school team and came back defeated. They were complaining among themselves, blaming each of them. After seeing their ways of playing, I had to give it a try. When they were training, I had to join them just to train and just for training purposes. When I joined, they were all surprised to see me on the field. My one touch gave me applause from the viewers. Other of my teammates were hailing me. When I got the ball, I dribbled from the midfield to the goalpost and scored a fantastic goal. This was when I was noticed. They had to fix me in the team. After training hard with them, we went for a friendly match with the toughest team ever known. We played them, and I scored a hat trick; they elevated my morale.

A month later, we prepared for the tournament. I was their striker. In our first game, we won with four goals to nothing. I scored a hat trick and was given the man of the match. In our second game, we played like never before and with all our hearts. We finally won two goals to nothing. When we got home, I was praised for being the sole woman who was able to deliver to their satisfaction. I spoke to my team and gave them beautiful advice that would bring us to a winning level. I stood out as the best sportsman on my team. I was not ready to tell my parents about my playing football, but then they later found out waiting for me to blow the whistle to them. I was afraid of telling them, but then I had to since I had no choice. They were initially not happy, but they concurred and warned me to be careful. I was happy and continued with my footballing.

Meanwhile, I never allowed that to disturb my academics, as I was a serious student.
Three days later, we went to yet another school to play with them. We won against them with 4 goals to nothing. Our winning tactics were the talk of the moment. We were not a threat to the schools around us. They were afraid of us. They mentioned my name as being the toughest on the team.

We played sixteen teams based on home and away, and we did not lose a match, nor did we concede a goal. It may be a surprise but reality. In the final match, we all prayed as usual and entered the field. We started playing, and after 45 minutes, there was no goal. In the second 45 minutes, we played, and in the 63rd minute, I opened the net. It was a happy moment for us. 79th minute, I saw the net with a second goal. In the last 93rd minutes, I sealed up the hat trick, and the whole of our schoolmates shouted, and they ran after the end of the match and lifted me. We won on a clean sweep. I was awarded, and my team lifted the trophy. After that day, my name was written boldly on the notice board in front of the classroom as the best of all times.

I can imagine how proud of yourself you must have been and your parents, they must have been so scared for your legs when you decided to continue playing football. Funny how I wasn't part of any sports team in school.
