I rarely get calls from my friends. If I do, it has to be an emergency or hot gist. My friends and I are so used to chatting online.
I was having a very cool bath in the bathroom when I heard my phone ring. As that girl who rarely receives call, I asked myself who it could be. Well, that’s surely going to be my mum, I said to myself.
Oh beautiful stars of Bethlehem, I continued singing in the bathroom until I heard the phone ring again. Who’s really going to call me twice if the case isn’t urgent? I thought and got out of the bathroom with bubbles on some parts of my body.
Before I could pick that call, my phone had already stopped ringing. It was Elizabeth, my best friend. I called her back immediately even though I knew she was about to give me a hot gist but only pretended not to know why she called.
“How far, babes,” I said to her. Elizabeth didn’t even respond to that. She just went straight to the point to give me the topic of the day.
“Kudirat is getting married in two days,” she said to me. I was so happy for my friend but I was surprised.
“How come she didn’t tell me about it?,” I asked Elizabeth but I learnt that the wedding was unplanned but she has to do it because she was pregnant and would not want to have a child out of wedlock.
Kudirat’s wedding would be on Thursday and I’ve got an appointment with a friend on Thursday as well. When I checked my WhatsApp, I saw that I have been added to the list of bridesmaid and there’s no way I can reject that offer because Kudirat is a good friend of mine.
“How do I give Kudirat my gift of time after I had promised Michael a play date on Thursday?,” I asked myself but I was so confused because I didn’t know what to do.
On Thursday morning, I woke up and headed straight to Michael’s house. I knocked on his door and with the way he responded, I could tell that he was still asleep. Michael opened the door and the first thing I said to him was “I know this is rude but bear with me,” he smiled and let me in.
When I told him about the wedding party I was going to, he felt bad after I had promised to spend the whole day with him but I eventually came up with an excuse.
“Your excuse is valid but I dislike the fact that I took an off day at work just for us to have a nice time. I just wanted to make sure that I give you my gift of time,” Michael said to me and I was short of words.
He spared a day for me and I’m about to spend that day with my friend. I felt bad but I still chose to go for my friend’s wedding because it’s a lifetime thing.
After spending three hours with Michael, I headed to the wedding venue. The event already started before my arrival. My friends and the bride had danced her to her seat already but when I entered the hall, I sighted Kudirat from afar.
She was dressed in a blue aso-oke material. She sighted me from afar and ran to me. We hugged each other tight and the master of ceremony halted the event.
Was I that big? I felt honored at that moment and presented my gift to her right away because I couldn’t hold the joy in me.
“I thought you may not be able to come and that’s why I didn’t bother to call you. Thanks for showing up for me and gifting me your time,” Kudirat said to me.
I went to my seat and exchanged pleasantries with my other friends. I ate to my satisfaction at the party. Some old women started sharing some souvenirs but as the bridesmaids, we were given something different entirely.
A small jewelry box that I have always wanted to have is what we were given. I was so happy because I knew if I had spared my day for Michael, I was going to enjoy it but I may not get the jewelry box I have always wanted.
Gifting Kudirat my time was worth it because I had maximum fun and the jewelry box is one of my most taken care of items till date.

STOPA surprise wedding can be shocking especially if it's your friend and you learned it from another. It's good to know you still spent some time with Michael and also attended your friend's party and had fun :)
