I’ve never experienced what writing the JAMB examination feels like but they say it’s very difficult. I’m not someone who believes what people say until it happens to me but I believed that JAMB is the most difficult Nigerian examination after my sister failed five times.

I’ll just do my best and leave the rest because my brilliant sister didn’t pass the examination also so I won’t be blamed if I fail, this was what I said when I was amongst my friends while talking about our upcoming examination.
We really wanted to gain admission into the University so we can start using hair extensions, fix our nails and live the big girl life.

My heart got broken when I got home from school and my dad handed over my JAMB form to me. I chose the University of Lagos but my dad chose the best university in Nigeria which is the University of Ibadan. That was a good move but I wanted to be in Lagos because there is more fun in Lagos than every other state in Nigeria.
Seeing the JAMB form made me buckle my shoes because I’ve heard different stories about the school so I just have to read well.

The total JAMB is four hundred and to gain admission into this institution, I’ll be needing about two hundred and thirty to be qualified for the next examination which determines if I will gain admission into the school or not.

I just want to score two hundred and forty marks. I’m going to be ten marks above the pass mark, I was so serious about this that I even had to write it in my diary. I didn’t just do that but I made sure that I worked towards it and after school closing hours, I usually sit back at the library to read.

Abojode, your mum is asking of you, my heart rate skipped when my Computer studies teacher, Mr Godswill came to meet me at the library to inform me of my mum’s arrival.

Did something bad happen? I asked innocent Mr Godswill but I just ran downstairs to see my mum to know if all is well. It’s so weird to see her come to school to ask of me.

What are you still doing at school? Your mates passed by the shop already and I kept wondering where you were, that was my first dsy reading at the school’s library. My mum was so scared and thought I got lost but I reminded her of something.

I guess I informed you that I want to start reading in the library from today. My examination is in ten days and I have to prepare well for it, I said to my mum to assure her that I’m fine and I’ll keep getting home late till I’m done with my examination.
As the examination day approached faster, I continued to get more serious. I was locked in reading my books and studying hard for the most difficult examination.

The examination day came already and I couldn’t sleep at night. My mum came to check on me multiple times but forced me to sleep at the fourth time.

Sleep. You’ve done your best so you need to let your brain relax. I’ll wake you up early in the morning so you can get prepared, that was the last thing I heard till I saw Aunty Kenny by my bed in the morning.
She’s my mum’s younger sister who’s supposed to take me to the examination center.

I rushed into the bathroom and got ready in just fifteen minutes. I’ve never been that fast. We got to the center and I met hundreds of people and parents who brought their kids to write the examination.
I became scared and realized that the examination is more serious than I thought when I saw people very much older than me who will be sitting for the examination as well.

Is this the difficult examination they all have been talking about? I asked Aunty Kenny because it was so simple to me. I felt I did it all well and the result will be out just in two days.
I got home and my parents wished me well again just like they did when I was about leaving the house.

When the result was out, my result was just as the doctor ordered. I got the exact result that I had wished for. Finally, I gained admission into the best university in Nigeria.
Maybe I could have wished more because that wish came to pass.
