I thought of scapegoats as I read this, of symbolic retribution. The need for revenge drives the girl in her quest for a snake. In the end, the narrator also wants retribution,as the wasp fails to sting. This is such a subtle and searing examination of conscience, that the story stays in the memory. How many wars have been fought, how many murders committed, because of rage and the desire for revenge?
