A Gradual Ascent

I live in a family of five children. I and my siblings were all raised well by our parents who are strict disciplinarians and never codoned any bad behaviors on our part. Our good upbringing aso reflected in our academics. Each school I and my siblings attended we have always been standout students.

I remember about two decades ago when my elder brother Gabriel was in highschool, it was an international school attended by people from overseas, he often told us of how he was cherished by his teachers because of how bright and smart he was. He was always there to answer the toughest questions in class and his grades were good.

“Our formmaster who's also our Physical and Health education teacher always said he feels sad if he comes to class and I'm not around. Countless times he's given me gifts because of my providing answers to difficult questions he asked during lessons.” There was a pleased look resting on Gabriel's face. “I felt like a king in the school those days.”

I didn't reply my brother. Thoughts were swirling my mind. Some ten years ago when I was attending lessons for my JAMB exams, one of the teachers had said the exact same thing to me.

“I'm not happy if I come to class and that young man is not around.” He said referring to me. “He seems to have an answer to almost all my questions.”

I revelled in the situation of being the teachers' favourite. Other students at the lesson center respected me too. This was also my experience while in high school. I was always ready to answer questions no body could. I was famous throughout the school for my intellectual prowess. I was especially loved by the English language teacher because of the high-quality writings I churned out in the subject.

I remember the time during my penultimate class in highschool, I had written an essay which was so good that our teacher in the subject came forward to announce it was the best in the entire class. I was overjoyed.

You may think I've always been like this but truthfully I was still operating at an average level before I entered high school. During my pre-highschool days I wasn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed.

My ascent to academic genius, so to speak was gradual. Most of my siblings were bright and smart right from the onset. I wasn't. I was never a child prodigy. Three of my siblings were.

I remember reading about a research that talked about some people who are bright right from a young age. Some remain average until adulthood. I believe I'm part of the later.

One unfortunate event occurred in my last year in high school. I developed a medical condition that messed with my faculties and made me recede badly in my academic performances. Though I'm trying to manage that with drugs and all that. Presently I consider myself average once more. So in a way I'm back to not being the sharpest tool in the shed again.

All my siblings are presently doing well especially my younger brother. I believe at this stage of my life I'm just lying still, biding my time. Soon the dark cloud of this pathetic medical condition will pass and the genius in me will rise once more like the sun rises to illuminate the sky in the morning. I have my sights set on world domination. Maybe then I can go back to being the sharpest tool once more...
