A guy around me threw the first stone on the nasty creature coiled up by the side of the road.
“You missed it.”
Someone close by said. Another stone was thrown and several voices said at once
“Yeah that one hit it really well.”
It was a dark and windy night. The air felt somehow chilly to the skin. We were trying to kill a snake by the side of the road and we were throwing stones on the nasty creature with all the strength we could muster.
“It looks as if the snake swallowed something”
someone observed. He was right. The snake was swollen up at its middle.
I was the one that administered the fatal blow to the string-like creature with a heavy stone.
I then continued on my way homewards. When I reached home, my younger brother was sprawled leisurely on the red cushion, his eyes were glued to the TV as he watched an interesting Premier League match.
“I almost got beaten by a snake today.”
I breathed.
He was silent for a while then asked:
“What happened?”
“Well I managed to kill it with the help of passerbys.”
“So you people killed an innocent creature.”
I knew he was joking. A smile was plastered on his dark face. I replied:
“It's neither innocent nor harmless.”
I walked into the room to do a late night laundry. As I did the laundry I occasionally muttered to myself,
“That was just so close. My putting on the flashlight at that moment was a stitch in time.”
“I will be back by 11pm.” I told my brother as I walked out of the house. I was going to run an errand.
The logde where I went was a comfortable place so I stayed back there after running the errands. I took a nice bath then spent time surfing the web and doing some reading. I finally decided to return home when it was 10.30pm.

The streets were somehow deserted. I walked briskly so as to be able to reach home in time. The night was dark and windy. I branched off the streets into a dark and bushy road. There were no lights illuminating this road so I felt cautious. After about 5 minutes of walking or so, I felt a strong persuasion to use my flashlight. What it you step on a dangerous creature? A voice in my head said. Well, I put on the flashlight and what I saw made my heart skip a beat. I was grateful for listening to that voice. I stood by the side of the road and waited. My heart gave irregular heartbeats. It turned out by listening to the voice that spoke in my head I had saved myself a lot of trouble that night. Listening to that voice was a stitch in time that saved me from a snake bite that might have proved fatal.
