“Just get one strategy that works,”
my friend Emmanuel said while his eyes blinked rapidly, his lashes fluttering in the sunlight.
“Ok.” I said.
I was sitting comfortably on the cushion, my arms resting leisurely on the red and blue arms of the sofa.
My friend's father who was sitting close by contributed to the conversation from time to time. He was reclining on the sofa and his focused eyes gazed straight ahead of him.
“He's right. A strategy that works, even if just one, is all you need.”
Emmanuel and I were just new to Forex trading and we were both ready to invest a little bit of money in the forex market to test this unfamiliar territory. His father was going to give him hundreds of dollars and I myself would invest whatever I could.
The atmosphere that surrounded our conversation felt warm and comfortable. I always felt deep warmth whenever I visited my friend and we got into conversations. And if his dad was around it felt even better. I found having conversations with his dad intellectually stimulating, entertaining and sometimes funny.
I met Emma a few days later and we reviewed our trading experiences so far with forex demo trading. He was already making some nice profits. So was I.
“That's no substitute for real money which I prefer by far. The demo aspect doesn't interest me at all.”
Emma's dad said when we mentioned this in his presence.
“Indeed. But the demo provides an invaluable learning experience.” I replied somewhat hesitantly.

I had come to Emma's house one fine sunny afternoon to view a football match. I think it was during the 2018 World Cup in Russia. A clash between Uruguay and Egypt. I preferred viewing it at my friend's home because of the lively atmosphere. While we watched we talked about many interesting things. World Cup history. The host country and many other interesting things. The shouts that exploded from our throats whenever a goal was scored or missed was exciting. Emma's dad made some insighful football remarks as we watched. Everyone in the sitting room shared in the general atmosphere of excitement and pure joy. I was feeling snug as a bug in a rug as I have always felt in such environments. I always feel a deep sense of warmth and comfort when rubbing minds with like-minded friends or sharing a moment of excitement with friends as I was doing that day.
Thus I enjoyed every world cup moment I experienced in Emma's living room throughout the tournament. Though the final was a blistering disaster for me as my favourite team was disappointing. Halfway through the match I think I just walked home.
Some weeks later I visited my friend's house again. His dad was around. I think he was just finishing a meal. We talked. I was excited. He was inspired. We went from our country's history, all of Nigeria's Coup d'etat to current affairs and whatnot.
“I think Abacha was the first, if not also the only Nigerian officer to climb to the rank of general without skipping a single rank.” I chimed in at a certain point.
“Yes. But he mismanaged the country. It's good he was gotten rid of.”
“Yes.” I brushed my mustache. “I remember how he ordered the killing of Saro-Wiwa. When Saro-Wiwa was about to be executed, he told the executioner the death warrant was a mistake and that he had spent many happy moments with General Abacha. Saro-Wiwa asked to see the general but they refused him and went on with the execution. His last words were 'God take my soul but the struggle continues'.”
Like this I spent many interesting moments with my friend and his dad. Sometimes his mom joined the conversation.
“How did you acquire all these knowledge?” She asked me one time. There was a sparkle in her eyes that indicated surprise. “You weren't born when most of these things happened.”
“Well.” I breathed. “I read a lot.”
Those days were some of the best days I ever had. Sadly my friend's dad is no more. He passed away two years ago.

“My dad is dead.”
Emma's trembling, emotional voice told me that night. I felt a chill run down my strained back. My mind went back to the last moments I spent with Emma's dad before his untimely death. It was the day of the final between Argentina and France. We both were alone in the living room watching. The excitement we felt during that match was palpable. I'm going to remember that moment to my dying day. There are not many moments in my life like these ones when I really felt deep warmth and comfortableness, you could say, more snug than a bug in a rug.
How good and rewarding it is when we find people with whom to share our concerns, thoughts, without feeling judged. It is a freedom of spirit and a comfort to the soul. How sad that your friend's father died. Greetings
