A 22 year old Rick had just finished his shift working as a barista at the redfish coffee shop. He had been working there for roughly a year now , and quite frankly he was tired of doing so. He was tired of accidently spilling coffee and making a mess, he was tired of the rude customers, the ones who would throw change in his face, or scold him whenever their coffee was taking too long, and worst of all, he was tired of the 3a.m. opening shifts. He never really understood why they had to open as early as 3a.m seeing as almost no one came till around 6am.

He really wanted to just leave all of this, but he'd promised himself he wouldn't give up, he promised himself if he'd ever return to his father's house it'll just be to say hello and probably to show off his achievements.

At his father's house, money was never a problem. His father was a well renowned senator, as a result anything he wanted he would get, no matter how expensive. He'd always worn the most expensive clothes and had the latest gadgets, but here he was serving coffee at a roadside coffee shop for a living.

It all started five years ago when Rick walked in on his dad having a conversation about keeping aside some government funds. He confronted his dad and his dad told him to keep shut.

"where do you think all the money comes from" he said

Since that day Rick decided he wouldn't live off his father's money. He got an after school job and saved enough to get himself an apartment far away from his father. Once he was done with school he moved into his own house in a different town.

But things didn't go as planned for him. Even with his degree he found it difficult to get any decent job. As a result, he didn't have any money, his clothes were old and worn out, he had to swap his phone for a lesser brand, he was tired of living life like this, he wanted to go back to living the easy life but he just couldn't.

He was changing back into his clothes and getting ready to go home when a familiar face walked into the coffee shop. It was Borris, his dad's personal assistant. He tried to look away and pretend as though he hadn't seen him, but he was too late, Borris was headed in his direction.

"Young Master Rick..."

"What are you doing here?" Rick interrupted.

"We need you to come with us."

"Tell my father I'm not coming!" he ordered

"That's why we are here, your father has passed."

Rick fell silent. He was stunned. Though he didn't like what his father was doing, he still loved him, and never wished him any harm.

"How could this happen?" Rick asked

"We don't know, the doctor says they found poison in his system."

He had finally let his evil deeds catch up with him.

Rick sat on a black office chair and his mum beside him did the same. At the other side of the desk sat the family lawyer with a brown envelope in his hand.

" Are you ready?" the lawyer asked

Rick turned to look at his mother whose eyes were already getting teary before saying

"yes"

The lawyer opened the envelope and brought out a white document. He put on his glasses and began to read

"I Senator Jerry Sánchez declare that this is my last and only will and any other one should be discarded.

I appoint Barrister Micheal Brock to oversee, and to make sure that everything stated in this will is adhered to.

All of my assets include two estates, my company, seven cars, all the money in my corporate accounts and all my private houses.

I hereby will the house which we live in and any one of my cars to my darling wife, Lisa Sánchez. All of my other inheritance will go to my hardworking son, Rick Sánchez who I trust will do the right thing with all my assets."

Rick's mother hugged him as the tears in her eyes began to drop.

Rick didn't want all of this. Sure he wanted to be rich and have anything he wanted but he didn't want to live off ill gotten money so he sold all of his inheritance and divided it into three. He gave one portion to his mum and the remaining he donated to various charity organizations. He was determined to be his own man.

Sort:

Far too often, we see people going against their words to kneel before filthy money.

Rick did otherwise. She stood his ground and I'm sure that his Mum will be proud of all he will be achieving on the long run.

Nice one @b0s

He's a very strong willed person.

Im sure she will. Thanks for reading

I wasn't expecting that hehe. What a principled man Rick was :) Nice story here!

He had all he wanted but he chose to do the right thing. A lot of people wouldn't do that. With an attitude like this I'm sure he will achieve his dreams. Thanks for stopping by.

You are right about that though. It's quite rare to find one like him in real life :) You are very welcome, it was a pleasure to read your story :)

Gosh, I didn't expect what Rick did. He really was determined to live life away from the luxury his father provided. These kind of stories always make me fearful about my future children. I often wondered if they would want to have anything to do with the wealth their father and I have built over the years or not.😞

There's no need to worry about this things. Besides, Rick most likely would have accepted the money if it wasn't gotten through dubious means.

It's good to stand by the truth, I like the fact that he was able to keep to his words in a face of dare temptation

Yeah, you know his type is very rare to find this days, those who would do the right thing even though it hurts them. Thank you for reading.

Well written!

For sure he will carefully handle all those properties very well he has proven to be a hardworking son who doesn't let materialistic things make him lazy!

Life was a bit difficult but he strive through at least with this so called unwanted inheritance it will help him out!

Yes, thank you for reading till the end.

It is good to have your principles and be displined in order to stick with them sometimes. Rick had everything but doing what was right was paramount to him. Great story

Yes, Rick is a very principled man, most won't do what he did. Hopefully he'll be able able to gain his own wealth the right way.

This story is well told. It has an arc, clear character development, and conveys a sense of being in the moment. We as readers might not fully understand Rick's inflexible position, but we can certainly admire his principles. We leave with the conviction that he will one day make his own way without using corruptly accrued wealth.

Weee, Thanks

This is really an interesting story, though I understand Rick's decision of becoming a man on his own rather than living off on his father's asset. @dreemport led me here

Thank you for stopping by.

Good for Rick! I'm glad he stayed true to his principles. Without our convictions and beliefs, and the strength to stand up for them, who are we? Nice story, thank you for sharing!

Exactly. A lot of people tend to throw their beliefs out the window when money is involved, but not Rick.
