It's five years now, but that day that brought the greatest Joy to me, I can't forget.
I was under 20 when I was forced to stay with my sick brother in the hospital, my aged father spent a year and a few months already and he was so exhausted and sick, my sister was living in Lagos state with her husband who had some disability so she couldn't leave him and come stay with my brother in the hospital, there is nothing I could do than to step in for my elder brother.
That was the worst season of my life, bathing my elder brother who was taking care of me, just in a twinkle of an eye, life changed for him due to an accident, he became more like a vegetable to date due to brain injury.
After a year and 7months of admission, we were discharged with a bill of 2.6m naira, which is equivalent to $4000, and my family, who were not that financially stable, they had exhausted all they had in buying his drugs.
It was only going to be a miracle because my family could not afford such an amount of money, at some point during covid era surviving in the hospital became so difficult for me and my brother, I cried every day asking God when all this would be over, if my brother had recovered fully the happiness would have been motivating me to continue but he wasn't himself anymore, this broke my heart every day.
Sometimes, I had to beg the nurses for food for my brother and I, and sometimes some good Samaritans would donate foodstuffs for us, that was the most hectic and challenging life I had ever experienced.
Whenever I remember the bill, I start crying because I don't know how on earth that money will come from, my family tried NGOs, but none were responding, and some of them said the money was too much.
We went begging the hospital personnel, but they couldn't do anything, I was just thinking we were lost in the hospital.
My elder sister kept reaching out to everyone she knew, but nothing was coming up, it was as if we were stuck, so many people were discharged, and they paid their bills and left the hospital, but we were still there.
All this while I slept on the floor, the hospital toilet was nothing to write home about, I fell sick almost every week, sometimes the nurses would want to take my brother's bed and give it to another patient, I would cry and plead with them not to do that, thankfully they all loved us and were praying for us.
One day the miracle I had been praying for happened because it was a miracle that brought Joy to my heart.
I was downstairs washing our clothes when I heard one of the nurses shouting my name, "Sonia Sonia, where are you?"
My mind skipped because I thought something bad had happened to my brother, I rushed up to the hospital ward and thanked God my brother was okay, he pointed to the nurse's office because he was not speaking yet, so that signal was to tell me that the nurse is looking for me.
I thought maybe she brought aloe vera for my brother's bedsore so I quickly went to the nurse's office, getting there she said "Call your sister and tell her your bills have been paid"
I fell on the floor and started screaming 😭 😭 😭, I couldn't hold back my tears because that was the last thing I was expecting to hear, many who come to pay people's bills in the hospital always said the bill was huge can't pay such amount for just one person.
I asked the nurse "Please where is the person that paid this amount of money, let me go say thank you "
"Unfortunately, the person wants to remain anonymous, the identity was not revealed to anyone here," The nurse replied.
I couldn't hold my Tears of joy I kept crying, and everyone came to rejoice with me, I was just thinking about how we would have survived that situation.
The nurse said "Go and call your sister, let's make arrangements on how you guys will go home, the struggle is over"
Immediately I picked up my phone and called my sister "Daaaa (Aunt) our bills have been paid, and we are asked to go home"
She didn't believe it, she called two nurses, and they confirmed that it was true and that the person ordered that he or she remain anonymous.
My sister immediately arranged a car that took us back to the village, when my mom saw us, she was overjoyed, all of us were so happy.
