A Reconciliation Gift Of Time.

in The Ink Well2 days ago

Catherine stepped into the café to get some coffee. Immediately she stepped into the café. She realized that almost everyone there was staring at an old woman who was weeping about what anyone has no idea about.
Why is this old woman the cynosure of this café? She asked one of the attendance. Catherine did not even wait for a response from any of the attendance after she realized that they only looked at each other and didn’t give a straight forward answer to her question.

Maybe when I give her a gift of time, she’d tell me what she’s going through, Catherine said to herself as she stepped forward to go sit with the woman and try to help her stop crying.

Hello madam, Catherine said to the woman, put her hands forward for a handshake but no response. The old woman raised her head to take a look at Catherine and burst into tears.
Catherine, who was really determined to help this woman solve her problem, didn’t even care if she was welcomed by the woman or not, but took a sit and sat right at her front, gazing at the old woman and when she got tired of the tears, she simply took of the glasses she was wearing and hugged the old woman.

Madam, I’m Catherine. A behavioral therapist who has decided to give you a gift of time after I saw you crying from afar, Catherine said to the old woman, putting on her glasses and hoping to hear from the old woman.

I’m Beatrice. I’m a fifty year old woman who’s currently regretting her past actions and I do not think there can be any solution. That’s why I’m here sipping my coffee, crying about the pain and ignorance I had, Beatrice said to Catherine with her voice shaking, a runny nose and red eyeballs. We could tell that she has been crying for so long.

Even before Catherine could say a word to Beatrice, water rolled down her eyes.
What’s the problem, Madam Beatrice. You can tell me anything, Catherine asked.

I was in love with Andrew for three years while we dated. Everything went smoothly and I felt I had found the one for me. Sadly, I got pregnant and Andrew changed his attitude towards me. He never wanted me to keep the baby even though he knew how risky abortion is, Beatrice rolled a tissue to wipe her tears. Catherine decided to be helpful by rolling more tissues to wipe Beatrice’s tears.

So what happened, Catherine asked.

I gave birth to the child, but my father was never pleased with me. He disowned me and made sure that I never entered the house again, and as a result of that, I began to live with my aunt who maltreated me while I was pregnant. Immediately I gave birth to the child. I ran far away to a place where no one knows me, Beatrice said and I guess this part of the story hurt her so much. Before she could make one more statement, she cried aloud that everyone eventually knew there was someone crying around the corner.
Catherine was left with no choice than to make her calm which she eventually did.

Then, I abandoned by baby girl at the front of a church, St. George’s church but before I did that, I made sure that I gave her a permanent mark so that I’d recognize her whenever I see her. Unfortunately, I’ve searched the whole world for my dear daughter but can’t find her, Beatrice said.

At this point, Catherine became very angry that Beatrice could see it in her eyes, but that may be because Catherine never expected Beatrice to abandon her own child but the story eventually turned the other way round.
Catherine reminisced back to when the old woman she lived with told her story.

I picked you at the front of St. George’s church in 1990 and since then, I’ve been the one taking care of you, Catherine remembered what the old woman said.

Catherine asked Beatrice to follow her to the restroom to be sure about the mark. Surprisingly, it turned out to be the mark Beatrice gave her baby.
Does this mean, you’re my mother?, Catherine asked Beatrice.

Out of happiness, Beatrice screamed. The attendants rushed into the restroom thinking something was wrong but when they entered the restroom, it was a different ball game.
They told the story to everyone in the café. People were surprised. A lot of people made their videos of the mother and daughter hugging and kissing each other.

This time, Beatrice had hope again because she never gave birth to any other child since then.
