A Stone’s Throw From A Breakup.

We all were in Afeez’s house that evening because that’s where my friends and I link up. On that evening, Lekan, Afeez, Tolu, Samuel and I were in Afeez’s hostel. Tolu and I were the only ladies there and we got into the kitchen to prepare Yam and Egg sauce. Everyone liked Afeez because he’s a kind of guy who loves to stock up foodstuffs in his hostel and when we’re broke, we all go to Afeez.

“Tolu, you know Esther must not know that we linked up today. You have to leave here fast because you know Esther is going to get angry,” Lekan said. I knew there was something those guys were hiding from me. Not only them but Tolu herself.

We were close friends and I expected her not to leep anything from me. Immediately Lekan made that statement, I saw Tolu rushing to grind the pepper so she can eat and leave before Lekan’s girlfriend, Esther gets to Afeez’s house.

“And you, Bisola. I know your mouth is wide but make sure that you’re being careful about what you will say when Esther gets here,” Lekan said to me. It’s not like I intentionally say all the things I see but I’m just used to it.

“Are you leaving already?,” I asked because I was feeling sad about her leaving and also me washing the plate which we all used to eat.
Just twenty minutes after, Esther got in.

“Bisola, how far now,” Esther greeted me.

“I’m good as you can see,” I said to Esther while she exchanged pleasantries with the guys in the room and she hugged her boyfriend, Lekan.

“Where is this aroma coming from? Did you guys cook?,” Esther asked and walked straight to the kitchen to dish some food for herself too. I think the only mistake I made was not thinking before saying anything and also not remembering the instructions that Lekan gave to me before the arrival of Esther.

“It’s Tolu. She made that delicious stew. That’s what we all ate before you got here just now. You can have yours…,” I wasn’t even done talking when I heard the sound of a plate that fell on the floor and got broken.

I looked and Esther’s face and also took a glance at Lekan’s face. I’ve never seen him get that angry in his life. He was raging with anger and I knew I already did something wrong because everyone immediately went quiet after I told Esther that Tolu made the dish.

In one minute, I remembered that Lekan had warned me earlier that I should not say anything about Tolu’s presence when Esther comes around. If it was possible for the ground to swallow me at that minute, I was going to allow it because I knew that I messed up already.
Also, Lekan could not say in Esther’s presence that he had warner me earlier not to ever talk about Tolu. We all kept quiet and gazed at each other.

Suddenly, Samuel laughed out loud about just happened. That even got Esther more angry and she walked out on all of us. It wasn’t up to thirty seconds when Lekan ran out of the room to catch up with her.

“Lekan, leave me alone. Tolu keeps being the problem we always have in this relationship and you’re not ready to change,” I peeped through the window and and saw Lekan kneeling on the floor to beg Esther. I felt so bad and saw how Afeez frowned at me.

“See what you’ve caused,” Afeez said to me and left the room. He went outside to plead with Esther so Lekan can be forgiven.
I knew I had overstayed my welcome but there was no way I could leave there without sorting out the problem that I caused.

At last, after too much noise outside the room and a lot of people were already making videos of Lekan kneeling down for Esther which trended in school on the next day, they later got inside and sorted the issue.

“I’m very sorry guys. I didn’t mean to let the cat out of the bag,” I said to them, got into the kitchen and washed the plates. I also cleaned up the mess which Esther had created when the plate fell.

I was about to leave when Lekan stopped me and told me what happened was nothing and that we all are still good. We eventually hugged each other and played Ludo for the rest of the day till I got tired and went back to my hostel.
