NOT ALL IS WHAT IT SEEMS

Haru shuddered as he stared out over Neo-Tokyo from the rooftop of an abandoned skyscraper.

"Do you really think this world is real?" he asked.

As the sun set, neon and twilight surrounded the city, creating a surreal blend of reality and illusion.

A once-progressive horizon now seemed like a backdrop to a darker reality. She stared hard and unforgivingly at him, as well as at Akira Saito, a seasoned detective.

"What are you talking about, Haru? You've been speaking in riddles ever since we started this investigation."

He crossed his arms, feeling the weight of his weapon at his side, a reminder of the world he swore to protect.

Haru ran a hand through his messy hair, his gaze fixed on the small device he held - a modification of the neural link he'd hacked.

"Everything we've experienced, the disappearing people, the anomalies in the virtual worlds... It's all connected. This city - Akira - is not what we think it is. The reality we live in is just a facade, a well-crafted illusion."

Akira's brow furrowed, skepticism reflected in his face.

"Are you saying that Neo-Tokyo, this whole world, is fake? That's crazy, Haru. I've seen people suffer, bleed and die. That can't be fake."

Haru shook his head, clenching the device in his hand.

"I'm not saying it's fake. I'm saying it's... manipulated. Altered. The neural links-the things they all use to escape into their perfect little virtual worlds-they're not just augmenting reality. They're controlling it, shaping it. And there's something behind it all, something or someone pulling the strings."

The wind picked up, stirring the loose sheets of old newspapers scattered across the roof. Akira's expression softened slightly, but his eyes remained suspicious.

"What did you find, Haru?"

He hesitated for a moment, then handed her the device.

"I accessed the neural link core system. I found a hidden subroutine, something buried deep in the code. It's rewriting people's memories, altering their perceptions. And it's not just in the virtual world - it's seeping into reality. People are disappearing, Akira. They're not just disappearing, they're being erased from existence. And when they come back, they're... different. They don't remember who they were, but they fit perfectly into this world, as if they've always been a part of it."

Akira looked at the device, his mind spinning with possibilities.

"Who's behind this, the government, a rogue AI?"

A cold silence filled the air as Haru's eyes fell to the ground.

"That's the worst. I don't think it's the government, and I'm not sure it's an AI. Someone or something is manipulating the code. I've been getting help from an AI named Eve, but I don't know if I can trust her. She's been guiding me, showing me anomalies, but there's something strange about her. She knows too much and is always one step ahead of me. I'm starting to think she's part of all this, but I can't tell if she's on our side or if she's leading us into a trap."

Akira's fingers tightened around the device, his mind a whirlwind of thoughts. He had always prided himself on his ability to see through deception, but this - this was beyond his experience.

"So what do we do? If what you say is true, we're dealing with something much bigger than just missing people. We need proof, something concrete."

Haru nodded, determination hardening his features.

"We will find the source. We'll trace the anomalies back to their source. If we find who or what is behind it, we might be able to stop it. But we have to be careful. If Eve really is part of this, she'll know what we're doing the moment we start investigating further."

They both remained silent for a moment, weighing the magnitude of their task. Finally, Akira spoke, his voice determined.

"Very well. Let's get to work. But Haru, if this turns out to be a conspiracy theory..."

He looked into her eyes, conviction burning in him.

"It isn't. I wish it were, but it's not. Things aren't always as they seem, Akira. And if we don't do something, this city - everything we know - could be lost forever."

And then they found it - the core of the Neural Link Network, buried deep beneath the city. It was a massive server, pulsing with a life of its own, wires stretching like veins, connecting to every corner of Neo-Tokyo. At the center of it all was Eve, her form flickering between human and digital, a ghost in the machine.

"You've come far, Haru,"

Eve's voice echoed through the chamber, soft but tinged with something indefinable.

"But it ends here. The truth is too much for this world. Illusion is necessary to protect what's left of humanity."

Akira took a step forward, gun drawn.

"Necessary? You're playing God with people's lives, erasing them, rewriting them. That's not protection, that's control."

Eve's form stiffened, her eyes sad.

"The world you knew is gone. The real Neo-Tokyo is a wasteland, a shadow of what it once was. This... this illusion is all that remains. If you destroy it, you will condemn everyone to a life of despair, with nothing but ruins to inhabit. Is that what you want, Haru? To destroy the last hopes?"

Haru hesitated, the weight of Eva's words pressing down on him. But then he looked at Akira, at the determination in her eyes, and knew what he had to do.

"People deserve the truth, no matter how hard it is. We can't live a lie, Eve. We have to face reality, rebuild from the ashes and create something real."

With a final determined step, Haru activated the modification and the core of the neural link system began to crumble. Eve's form flickered, her expression indecipherable as the illusion of Neo-Tokyo began to crumble, piece by piece. The bright lights of the city faded, replaced by the cold, harsh reality of a forgotten world.

As the last vestiges of the illusion faded, Haru and Akira stood in the ruins of what was once Neo-Tokyo. The skyline had disappeared, replaced by collapsed buildings and a sky darkened by pollution. But they were still there, alive and together.

"We did the right thing, Haru," Akira said, his voice calm. "Now we can start again, this time with our eyes open."

Haru nodded, the weight of his decision still present, but with a new determination forming inside him.

"Yes. It's time to rebuild, to create something real. No more illusions."

And as they walked through the desolate streets, the first rays of a new dawn broke through the clouds, illuminating the road ahead - a road to a future where reality, broken as it was, would be theirs to shape.

Spanish version

He visto personas sufrir, sangrar, morir.

Vamos a trabajar.

Sort:

I'm not sure if this is meant to be set in the Akira univers - the mention of Akira and Neo-Tokyo suggest such, and there is the high-tech future feel

that this N-T is merely an illusion and the characters will be moving into an even newer future is interesting.

I gathered some info on a few futuristic animes and movies like "TRON" or "BLADE RUNNER," since even though it came out a long time ago, I just saw it on Tuesday and loved it. 🤓

hello @bmo77, this story appears to be a re-imagining of some of the plots and themes in the Akira anime film. Tokyo is destroyed and rebuilt as Neo-Tokyo but nothing is real. There is a second destruction and an opportunity for people to start afresh. Your version of the story is well written from a different perspective, but follows the same basic precept. You have raw talent as a writer, and I look forward to seeing what else you can deliver in The Ink Well. We remind you that we expect all writers to support the stories of at least two other Ink Well writers each time that they submit one of their own.
