A Taste Of Nostalgia

in The Ink Well10 days ago (edited)

Maya woke up so early that morning, feeling so alive, and energetic. it was weekend already which meant she could take a break off work and focus on her "self."

"Oh how she loved weekends!" She thought as she hummed her favourite song.

She then scanned through the to-do list which always hung on the room door.

"Oh, I’ll be doing the laundry and getting some groceries at the central market today." She quickly jumped out of her bed.

She picked up her headset and began playing some of her favorite jams, about to start laundry, she discovered she had ran out of detergent.

"Jeez! How didn’t I take note of this." She spoke in an agitated voice before deciding to go over to Cindy’s (her neighbor's), to ask for some.

"Helllloooo, Is anyone in?" Maya stood at the front porch knocking, but no one answered, she stood confused not knowing the next step to take. "Mirabel is that you?" Cindy walked out from the barn, smiling broadly.

"Oh there you are! For a second, I thought you were already out and about, doing your job" Mirabel said, smiling back.

Cindy was a single parent and a successful livestock farmer who raised farm animals like cows, chickens, pigs and sold their produce at the local market. When Maya moved into Cindy’s neighborhood, she helped her get around, which made things easier for her. Cindy's son, kelvin was 12.

"Haha, kelvin wants me to take a break today." Cindy replied with her toothy smile, it was a marvel at the way he cared for his mother, at his age.

"How is Kelvin? I’m sorry I haven’t been coming around to say hi, I’ve really been so busy at work." Maya’s face was pale as she continued "You and your son have been my family ever since I moved into this neighborhood. You always check up on me but I'm not always able to reciprocate your kind gesture towards me. I feel really bad."

"Look at this cutie pie, we know how busy you are, you don’t have to feel bad at all. We are family and we understand each other."

Cindy pulled Maya into a tight hug and called her in for a cup of coffee. They chit chatted for a while, then Maya went back home with the pack of detergent Cindy had given her, which was more than enough for her laundry.

It was past noon and Maya was done with the laundry. The next to-do was going to the grocery.

It was a sunny day—Maya wore a tank top, jean shorts and paired them with a bucket hat for extra shade, dark sunglasses, a tote bag and a pair of sneakers, and she was good to go.

"Taxi, taxi! Central market please," Maya hopped in and in no time she done shopping.

"Good job". She muttered to herself.

As she waited for a taxi back home, she noticed a newly opened attic store and decided there was no harm in doing some window shopping. There she found vinyl record players, vintage dresses, grandfather clocks, handwritten letters with feather inks, oil lamps etc.

"These are too beautiful, I should get some for myself" Maya said, as she admired the array of beautiful items on display but what caught her attention was something from her past —they were vintage kitchen utensils including an old flower-patterned ceramic. These items filled her with so much nostalga. She was reminded of the several holidays spent with her grandmother, who loved serving her meals in ceramic plates.

Maya remembered vividly how on such visits, her grandmother would cook basmati rice and serve with hot Biryani sauce. Another wave of nostalgia!

"Ma, would you like me to help you with anything?" A young girl's voice cut into her reverie.

"Oh no, It’s alright" I would just pick up these items and pay at the counter.

As she headed home, she mentally checked out all the ingredients she would be needing for a taste of nostalgia, just the way her grandmother made it.

When Maya was done, she was happy with the outcome and took some to Cindy and kelvin which they really were grateful for.

The weekend had been swept away so swiftly, just like the ocean across the shore—it was Monday morning already .

"Urghh," Maya picked her bag and left for work.
