Her Ailing Heart

It was a traumatic experience, it felt like my whole world had crumbled to the ground, as I saw my cousin lying lifeless on that cold, hard floor. Fhidelia and I are cousins but she was older with one year. We were also very close, like sisters.

Although our houses were hours apart, It seemed like we actually lived in the same neighborhood, because we always visited each other whenever we had the opportunity.

"Fhidelia, I’ll be coming over today, what would you like me to bring?" I asked her over the phone, one early morning.

"Really? That's great!…Please bring " hot okpa" (a type of local snack) as you are coming" Fhidelia responded.

"Okay, I will, see you”. I let out a yelp of delight as I hung up.

I began packing the "usual snacks" and was ready in no time.

"Mummy, I’m off to Fhidelia’s place"
"Say hello to my sister (Fhidelia’s mom)" My mom said.
"Okay mummy, I will."

"Are you sure you don’t want me to drive you?"

"No mummy, I’ll be fine"

I did not want to waste any extra time having to wait for my mom to get ready before dropping me off, I was too excited.

"Good afternoon Aunt" I greeted as I opened the gigantic door to their house.
"Aha my baby, how are you? We have missed you a great deal". Fhidelia’s mom said as she hugged me tightly and pecked me on my cheeks.

"Aunt, I’m no longer a baby o o, I’m now a big girl, I’ll be done with high school by next year" I said in protest. She has been calling me that for as long as I could remember.
My Aunty let out a hearty laugh "Okay o big girl, I won’t call you a baby anymore"

"Hey hey!!". Fhidelia walked in almost immediately, giving me a very tight hug (I thought I was going to choke, lol). We had not seen for over a month—she was busy with her WAEC and other entrance examinations preparing her for the university—she needed to burn the midnight oil without distractions.

After exchanging pleasantries with my Aunt, Fhidelia dragged me into her room.

"Come, I have got tons of gists to share"

My ears tingled in excitement.

We spent all day gisting, eating and watching American movies. When we got exhausted, we dozed off.

The next morning came, Fhidelia’s mom took us on a shopping spree to celebrate, Fhidelia was done with her examinations(though she awaited her results), and it was something really worth celebrating.

Two months later, Fhidelia’s results were out. I followed her to a cybercafe to check her results, she was so nervous.
"I’m sure you passed your WAEC, can you please calm your nerves?" I reassured her.

"Well, It was an external exam….I wrote well but I can not say same for the graders"

"Have faith please" I reiterated.

"Okay, what would I have done without you" Fhidelia said as she wiped a tear from her eye.

We got there to a long queue, a lot of persons had come to also check their result. So we stood in line and waited for our turn—people came out jubilating while some expressed utmost disappointment. An hour later, It was finally time for Fhidelia to check hers. I waited anxiously at the corner….Fhidelia had failed two subjects and was to re-sit them the following year. She felt devastated, I could feel her pain.

Everything everyone did to soothe her ailing heart was futile, there was nothing I could do even. I then decided to stay at her place, I wanted to be emotionally and physically there for her—It was the least I could do at that point in time.

"Please try and eat something." Fhidelia’s mom and I pleaded severally with her, but she wouldn't listen to us, she had not spoken to anyone in days.

I was using the convenience when I heard my Aunt scream.

Fhidelia!! No please! I quickly ran out, only to see her bending over my cousin. Fhidelia lay on the floor lifeless. My heart jumped into my mouth as I checked her pulse, it was faint but it had me so relieved.

It was 5:00 am, I thanked God it was dawn already and we could get her to the hospital.

We rushed Fhidelia to the hospital as early as possible, but for the early attention, she would have been far gone.

The following year came, I sat for the exams and passed. Fhidelia also passed all her subjects and we got admissions into the university—it was one of the most beautiful moments of our lives and we shed tears of joy.

What a huge disappointment it must have been for her but sometimes, delay doesn't mean denial, it's just God wanting to do it at the right wanting to do it at the righttme.

Exactly, thank you

She had a lot of sleepless nights just for the exam so it will be so disappointing if she didn't pass, you are just a caring sister and that's a good one.

Thank you.

We must wait for the right moment.
