I woke up feeling so weak and grumpy, I was feverish all through the night and that morning, I could barely get up from my bed. When my Mom walked into my room, she immediately knew something was wrong by the look on my face. She touched my skin, it was burning!
"I need to get you to the hospital as soon as possible, your temperature is very high." She spoke anxiously.
Feeling so weak, I managed to nod my head in agreement. Thirty minutes later, we were on our way to the hospital. I was given shots of injections and medications to get well and then we headed back.
The next morning, I still wasn't quite myself, but a call came in as soon as I woke up. It was from my best friend, Lina.
"I called last night but your Mom told me you were indisposed. How are you feeling now? I could sense the concern in her voice.
"I'll soon be as fit as a fiddle." I tried joking but the words came out as a weak whimper.
"You had better be! We need to start making preparations for your birthday, girl I've found the best place for your makeover, and for your hair? There's a new place in town, you need to check it out...... Lina went on and on while I simply listened.
I’ve always been big on my birthdays, I’ve always loved taking photo shoots and going out to have fun with friends, but that year's birthday, I just didn't feel like it —for the first time ever, I didn’t feel excited about my upcoming birthday at all.
"Why wouldn’t you want to celebrate your birthday huh? You've had strings of disappointments... And so what? Nobody should be worth making your life stand still for." Lina continued ranting in her usual manner. I was not up for this conversation but I didn't want to make her feel bad, didn't want her knowing that I was uninterested in any form of celebration, especially my birthday.
I looked out the window as raindrops drizzled gently down my roof. Last year was different, I thought. He was here by my side, making promises that he would never leave. He planned my birthday last year and made me feel like the most loved woman on this planet...... Hmmmm...... I sighed heavily!
"Oh, it had all been a pack of lies, empty promises! They were all the same!
My mom had just walked into the room with a hot and spicy plate of stirred fried noodles…
"You won’t be celebrating your birthday this year?" She asked sounding as surprised as my best friend was.
"Let’s talk later, I want to try and eat something."I said to my Lina and ended the call.
"Yes mom, you heard me right!" I quickly dived into the food, signaling the end of that discussion.
"Okay, if that’s want you really want" My Mom understood, not wanting to pry, didn't dwell on the subject, she silently helped me arrange my room while I ate my food.
It finally got to my birthday and so many notifications came in, felicitations poured in, my family sang me birthday songs, my mom prepared my favorite meal. Infact my family celebrated me on my big day—I felt happy that they did and commended them on their efforts.
It was 3:00pm and we were done with the mini celebration at home. Just when I was about settling down to watch a korean drama on my laptop, I got a call from one of my friends, inviting me for dinner.
"Happy Birthday Caramel! I hope this new age brings nothing more than great things, because you deserve it and more." Priscilla effused.
"Awww, thank you so much dear friend." I replied.
"Com'on, stop giving me that attitude, the dinner is on me. All you need do is look your best, dress nice and come over. See you, in an hour!" She hung up immediately, rejecting all my excuses not to.
I reluctantly stood up, and prepared for dinner. When I arrived the hotel, Lina came out to meet me, I was surprised to see her there.
What’s happening, were you invited by Priscilla too?" I asked, not hiding my surprise.
"Yes" Lina nswered. "Come with me!"
"Okay."
I followed her. After climbing a few stairs, she flung a door wide open—I was standing right at the entrance of the foyer of the hotel, greatly decorated with lots of gifts, a trumpeter started playing a birthday song as soon as I stepped in, and my other friends, all walked in from different directions.
"Surprise, surprise." Priscilla muttered as she hugged me tight.
I screamed for joy, my heart was overwhelmed with happiness, I was infact grateful for my friends, they added a touch of magic to that year’s birthday, because it turned out to be the best birthday I have ever had.
In no time, I was ready to celebrate! My friends had turned my day into one filled with magic.
