As I understand it, and I am still learning here, following the trail is simply like voting on the post yourself, with your vote value/weight, and you would receive the curation payout as if you voted on it yourself. Combining votes helps the author most, I think, though if you're following someone with a large upvote (like in this case my CCC vote), you know the total payout is large so your share will be larger. ... I've never actually followed a trail, because I like voting on posts for myself, so this is new turf for me too.
