Don't rule them off

Being a teacher is not easy cause you will try your best to be patient and tolerance of these kids, they can be naughty, and mischievous at times but it's our duty as teachers to correct them and point them in the right direction, the headmistress lectured

It's not going to be easy; some of them will stretch your patience limit, and others will simply be acting dumb, no harsh words on them. Whatever you can't handle bring it to my table, she continues lecturing the new teachers.

That's all for now; please go back to your classmates, she concluded.

"Aunty Queen, please follow me to my office. She was talking to me. I followed her, and she offered me a sit; then she told me that the class I was going to handle was very delicate and that I would need to pay extra attention to them.

She took me to the class, introduced the pupils to me, she pointed out all the stubborn and mischievous pupils. Then, there were these four sets of kids in the back row; she called them out one by one to introduce them to me.

"This is Denzy, he stammers when his scared or afraid, please be gentle with him, he's a very bright pupil, here is Cecilia, she is not all that bright and can be very stubborn more than all of them, use your mouth and talk, no punishment, here is Celina she is always shy and not clever at all, she and Cecilia are twins. Last but not the less Ayodele, just handle him with care, that will be all", any question, she asked

"Sorry ma, why did you say I should hand him with care when it gets to Ayodele, is he sick or a special needs child", I inquired

"None of the above, you will get to find out," she said and asked if that was all; I said yes, and she left.

Well, I took everything she said in and settled down. I took my time to observe each child's behavior, especially the ones everybody says they are not bright. Denzy is always scared like he has been abused at home; I find out he was and reported to the mom, and their maid was sent away; Cecilia is indeed very stubborn and smart but not intelligent; she just has this street smartness as little as she was.

Her twin sister, Celina, is a bit unpredictable, appears dull but very intelligent. Ayodele never fails any of his homework but will always fail his classwork, but when you call him to say it one-on-one, you find out he is brilliant; I found out he likes sitting with Celina, so I paired him and Celina, and I noticed a huge change in their classwork. There was a competition for primary one children coming up.

I decided to select the kids who would go for mathematics and quantitative reasoning, and I chose the ones who would go for English and verbal reasons, too. When I pointed them out everybody disagreed with my choice.

Aunty Queen, how can you choose Ayodele and Celina from all the children in your class? Aunty Mercy questioned me.

Aunty queen, you should be smarter than this; you came highly recommended, yet you couldn't identify that these were the dullards in your class, Anuty Gift said.

So it's you people that have been telling this kid that they are dull; no wonder they are so timid to say anything, I retorted.

We don't need to it's all over them, Anuty gift continue

Can we make a bet? Bring two of your most brilliant pupils and let them compete with these two, I said very confidently.

Well, that's your business; you are the one that will be disgraced, Aunty better chip in from her end.

I didn't answer them again; I turned to go back to my class only to see Ayodele at the door looking at me with a sorry eye; I walked up to him, took him and Celina to my seat, and asked them to sit. I told them to not allow whatever those aunties say about them to get to them.

I want them to make me proud, so they won't laugh at me; I asked if they understood, and they nodded their head. I started teaching them extra classes without being paid for it. I don't even know why I picked them, although I paired them with the one everybody taught was very intelligent among them for the competition.

I notice Celina and Ayodele will always tell others the answer but will refuse to answer it themselves.

On the day of the competition, I had already bought what I promised them that I would get for them if they made me proud. When they got to the stage, they shocked everybody, including me. I know they were intelligent, but not to the length they went. I was literally shedding tears of joy.

All the other teachers were shocked; they weren't shy at all but very outspoken, including their parents; everybody thanked me for bringing out the best in them. I don't know how it happened but I was the proudest teacher that day.

Yes, being a teacher is not quite easy. I was once an assistant teacher and I know how it feels to see your students doing well, especially in competitions.

Yes, i was thrilled cause I never expected it

I don't have the patience to be a teacher, students can be so dramatic and they are ready to fraustate you at all time

Lol, seriously teaching needs alot of patience

And humility oo

I can fully relate to this story because as a teacher, discovering the hidden talents of kids, especially the ones that have been ruled off , is a big win.

Seriously, my happiness was everywhere, today those two are doing well in high institution

That's really great and this shows how blessed teachers are especially those that can uncover diamonds in the rough.

Children just need to be shown love and they’ll bring out the best in themselves

Exactly, just treat them like your own
