Why is everywhere quiet? , who left the doors open ?, Faye, Victor, Queen, I heard my aunty calling us from outside. I quickly told my cousin that their mother was back.
She called us again, and that's how we all answered at the same "Ma". When we came out of our room, she was already in the kitchen, bringing out the groceries that she bought from the market. We greeted her, she asked us to help her unpack, which we did.
What she bought were so many that I was forced to ask her if we were having a party and she just smiled that some visitors were coming over for an important occasion and all of us were just curious as to who is this visitor that she won't even tell us but she is just humming happily like a mother her son is coming back after spending years outside of the country
Well, we helped her to arrange all the things which she needed to use in cooking and even helped out to cook in the kitchen, Faye went to arrange the dinner table for food, at eight o'clock in the evening, the doorbell rang and some of our Anuty and uncles came in and the house was full with family members.
After dinner, I dragged my cousin outside and I asked them if anybody was getting married in the family that I was not aware of and they said, They don't know equally. Well, the next day, the noise was just too much, with the smell of fried meat and hot jollof rice aroma just filling the air.
I stretched and made my way to the place the aroma was coming from and it was at the back of the house. Jollof rice, native soup, and drinks were been packaged inside a big thermo cool cooler. A van was there to chill off the drink, I was confused and surprised too.
I thought last night was just because of my uncles and aunties that came around that's why we cooked all those delicacies. But waking up this morning seeing everybody busy but still not knowing what we were celebrating was confusing.
Anyway since nobody wants to say what we are celebrating, I decided to help out, at least there is some nice main cost and appetizers to eat and some cocktails to step it down.
Around ten o'clock in the morning, we were done and my Aunty asked me and my cousins to dress up in our best attire, as we were going for an important occasion. I was tired of the secrecy, I had to ask them again.
Please Anuty, what exactly are we celebrating and who, cause am just curious to know.
You will know with time, just relax, my aunties said
Why didn't we invite Maye to join us for the occasion, I asked
They have an event at the school today and she won't be making it, my Anuty replied
Okay, we set out on the journey to God knows where, everybody was chatting, laughing, and having fun. We got to a place and my uncle stopped driving, when I inquired why we were stopping, she said some people needed to join us at the occasion, and we needed to go in envoy.
My cousin Faye whispers into my ears, it looks like Uncle Nnamdi is going to propose and they want to surprise the lady.
I don't think so, is that why they will cook all this plenty of food to impress, who exactly? The family or the lady, I replied
Well, I don't know. Everywhere was silent, soon we arrived at my cousin's school, and it then dawned on us that we had come to surprise her at her convocation, but wait, who was the person that joined us?
When we came down, my aunt set up a tent, decorated it very well, and sent us to go and call her. She was so happy to see her convocation turn into a party, people troop in especially those no one came for, then she kept asking us why we didn't even hint her, her mother told her she kept it a mystery cause she knew we would tell her.
She was crying because my aunt told her that we all couldn't make it and told us that we wouldn't be going, it was only my uncles and aunties that were aware of her plans to surprise her. It wasn't the end of the surprise, a tent that was built when we went to call her, was filled with balloons when she was told to go inside that a surprise was waiting for her, her fiance was there, he surprised her with a car and proposed to her. She was jumping and shouting. It was so magical, that I started wishing I was the one been surprised like this.
