For me, happiness is feeling good about ourselves and then about others.
I think Elma doesn't feel good about herself in the first place, and that's why she had a hard time accepting everything else.

You may be right. Although, we all have our different perspectives to this.. Some persons believe she was right while others feel she wasn't suppose to react the way she did. Hmm...From different angles, they are all right. It's all about balancing the whole thing.
