The Mysterious Crying Woman

Winters in Dawson City were always cold and dull. Thomas, who was an anthropology graduate, decided to change things up and become a taxi driver for a small transport company in Asia to pass the time, explore new places, and earn some extra cash. Riku, who was the previous driver for Thomas's route, advised him against doing the night shift. Thomas didn't think too much of it at the time.

One evening, Thomas decided to take the opportunity to do some overtime work and drive the entire evening route of another driver. The first part of the route passed through a rural area where there were many meadows and patches of farmland. After a few minutes, he entered a dense forest where the road was mostly made up of loose bits of gravel, rotting leaves, and damp soil. The air was getting hotter and more stifling as he advanced further into the forest.

As he slowed down to prepare a sharp curve, the dim headlights of his jeep illuminated the faint shape of a young woman in a beautiful white dress hunched next to a palm tree that was situated near the edge of the road.

"Who is that? Is she waiting for a ride?", one of the passengers quietly asked.

Thomas, being a very helpful man, stopped the jeep on the side of the road and told his passengers to wait a few minutes. He left the jeep and headed towards the woman. As he got closer, he began to notice that she was sobbing uncontrollably. Upon hearing his footsteps, she turned to him and pointed to his jeep.

"Do you need to catch a jeep? It's a bit dark outside", he said cautiously.

The lady gained some of her composure and shakily muttered, "I wasn't able to go. I'm so sorry".

Thomas immediately replied, "No, we can go. It's for your safety". Then, he looked down and held out his hand to take hers. However, just as he did so, he felt an ice-cold chill run up his spine.

When he looked up the woman was gone, but the air around him quickly got colder and the ambient light grew darker. He felt that something was terribly wrong. When he returned to the road, his jeep was gone and the place looked slightly different. Suddenly, from the distance, he could see the hazy silhouette of a car approaching with people laughing inside.

It was difficult to make out the exact features of the car, but it seemed to come from a different time period. As the car got closer, the sounds of laughing turned to a chorus of horrible demonic screams that filled the midnight air. Then, in a blink, there was absolute silence. There was simply no time for Thomas to react.

Before he could do anything, the atmosphere changed once again. A sharp blast of hot air sent him staggering backward. He could hear his passengers calling him back to the jeep saying, "What happened man?".

Thomas drove the rest of the route without saying a word. Upon returning to the taxi depot, he asked Riku about the area where he saw the woman in white. Riku told him that back in the 1930s, a young woman was reported missing on the day of her birthday. Many of the locals believe that her disappearance was somehow linked to a mysterious incident that remains unknown to this day.
