Nobody can be trusted the way you trust yourself and when you finally realised this, you will know how to make good decisions when choosing friends.
Some years back, after completing my National diploma (ND). I started searching for a job to do for a few years before i further my education. One day, my younger sister told me about his friend telling him about a job vacancy at a company in the city. I was so happy that I'd i get a job. I added this person on Facebook as friend and we started communicating. He said if i need the job, i should come urgently for it because there are limited spaces available. He said they needed two female secretary and a male accountant. So, i wrote my application letter and also assure him, i would be coming. According to him, i don't need much interview as they already know much about me given to the fact that he had explained to the management about me. Well, i believed him. The following day, I packed my bags to travel.
My mum was worried, " why not check the place first and come back home instead of going with all your bags to start a job you don't know much about, "she complained". Mum, i will be fine, i will go to uncle's place if i see any changes in my plan, "i responded". My mum's younger brother lived in the city with his wife and kids.
So, mum prayed with me and i left home eagerly.
A lot of thoughts beclouded my mind. Will i stay with uncle for so long while working?, will i have to rent an apartment?, how much will the job offer me?, all i know is the address and the name of the company.
Well, with my luggages, i got to the venue, i called my friend who came to assisit with the bags too. We got there but i was baffled. The company mentioned to me was opposite direction of where we are going but i decided to keep quiet and wait patiently for what's next. We climbed stairs to the last floor then i saw crowd. Ahh!, what's going on here?, "I asked him". He said, we're about to start seminar, after the seminar, we will go to the company. Okay, i frowned as i find a place to seat.
We were there both young men and women, old and middle aged. I kept wondering what kind of job would employ an old man who look like a man in his 80's.
However, the seminar commences. A young man lead the opening prayer and another person led us in islamic prayers. Then, a fair, robust lady came up in front to address us and also mentioned the number of classes we should be expecting in the seminar.
The lecture was divided into three sections in which she will start the first one. Suddenly, she began with slangs, she called and some group of people standing at the back responded loudly. I believed it was there mode for greetings.
The lecture goes on and on and i became more hungry as time pass. Finally, the last lecture began and i pay more attention. That was when i realised that I've been decieved. The job description and everything was fake, no wonder the young man who anchored the second class said he dropped out of school because he got this job. A job that cut off one's academic journey, a job that had too much risk, a job that doesn't give room for your future. One will work and work till one dies. I fully understand the job was all about networking, you had to sell drugs, going from one street to another, you will register with a certain amount of money, your gain is from the amount you made selling drugs, if you don't sell, you can't get paid. The worst part of it is that, you must bring new members if you want to get promoted, if you bring four people you become a manager, and then later, if those four bring another four people each, you get more promotion and even travel outside the country. Hilarious right?.
At the end of the sections, all the workers began to cajole people to register for the job. A job they were lured into. A young woman who sat beside me said, "she was given a flyers which indicates"workers needed, cook, laundry, housekeeper and the amount placed there where glaring so she came for the cook job only to find out it's all fake.
I got angry at the boy i called a truthful friend. Where do you say the company is again? I asked. Well, I'm sorry, i had to do that to get someone registered too.
He said. The statement got me more angry. Instead, i work out disappointed. My heavy bags were there too. I should have listened to my mum. Then it dawned on me that no one can be trusted. Just believe in yourself and keep going. I went to my uncle's place to stay before returning home to tell my humble story.
