A spark occurred as Rayna dug her trowel into the dirt again. Immediately she knew that she had hit something, so she dug in again and had another spark. She dropped the trowel by her side and began to fork the sand out with her fingers anxiously. This has to be it, she had spent most of her archeological years in search of this set of figurines.
As she unearthed the little metallic container, she observed the exterior attentively, hoping that the contents were in tandem with her expectations. It looked a little rusty with iron clamps on both sides that seemed to be welded to each other. Instinctively, she grabbed the hammer from her cross bag and with a few hits the rusty clamps fell off.
As she opened the box, she could feel the adrenaline bubbling within her in expectation and hope. She closed her eyes as she raised the lids, a glitter from the box as it came it contact with the sun, as it descended on the horizon prompted her to open her eyes excitedly. She grabbed the little piece which looked in excellent shape and caressed it like it was a new born baby.
Jack was startled up from his sleep as he jumped out of his bed scared and sweating. He looked around his room to see that it was still in order and that it was just a dream. He walked over to his window and folded the blinds, glad to see the sun rising from the horizon, which meant he did not have to go back to bed.
He sat on the edge of his bed, the morning sun washing all over him as he began to wonder what was happening to him. He's been having the same dream, or perhaps nightmares for weeks now with no let-off in sight. The same man, saying the same thing, in the same scene with only changing colours.
With his dad too busy with work and his mom away for one of her usual trips, he was left alone in the house with no one to talk to. His mind began to wander in an endless tour of self examination, trying to figure out what he might have done or who might have cursed him, but all he could see was a void.
He stood up, got prepared and left for school. At least over there, he can be distracted with school work and the noise from students, so he wouldn't have to wonder about demons in his sleep.
Rayna stepped out of the taxi, waving and smiling at her neighbours as she ascended the pavement that led to her apartment. Excitedly, she jiggled her keys a little before slotting it into the keyhole to open the door.
As she stepped into the house she took her newest piece out of the bag and went straight to the basement where she had her other collections. As she dropped the last piece of her collection into the box that contained the other pieces, she noticed a glow around the group of figurines but immediately dismissed it as just a fiction of her imagination, or perhaps a reflection from the sun that beamed into the basement from the hollow created atop it for ventilation.
Feeling a rush of tiredness, she swaggered back to her room to freshen up and have a well deserved rest from her latest accomplishment which she was sure would imprint her name among the greats.
Jack got home late to see the door already opened. Surprised, he rushed into the house to see footprints that led straight to his mom's room. He could see her dead asleep with her clothes sprayed over the foot of the bed. He scoffed, turned off the lights, closed the window blinds and went back to his room.
As he went over to his window to close the blinds, he noticed the moon glowing up in the sky and was surprised because it wasn't yet time for it. Again he scoffed "climate change must really be having its way" he thought and went straight to bed to check what's been happening online.
Hours later, still fiddling with his phone, Jack heard a little rustle, like someone was falling and rising. Calling out at his mom with no reply, he sped off to her room, only to find it empty. He immediately left the room, tracking the source of the noise to the basement.
Shocked at what he was seeing, he ran towards his mom but was immediately stunned by an electric shock that seemed to emanate from her fingertips. Laying back down with a searing pain spiraling throughout his body, he struggled to sit up straight and was surprised at the immediate surge of strength through his body as his hand came in contact with the moon rays.
He immediately rushed to stand under the moon rays and felt himself floating in midair, glowing from head to toe. His mom on the opposite side of the room seemed to be writhing in pain, as if trying to wriggle away from whatever was possessing her. Her eyes glowed red, she seemed to be more 8ft tall and had hideous horns, while red sparks seemed to be radiating from her veins to the tip of her fingers and toes which had suddenly grown extraordinarily long.
"I am Laxlaw, the ancient god of thunder who had been buried for so long, but thanks to Rayna who have recovered all my parts and made me whole again" the Rayna creature growled.
"This isn't your territory and I'll make sure you're returned to where you belong" Jack could hear himself say without knowing how. "I knew you were close, so I found a close vessel in preparation for you" he added
"Hahaha! Let's see you do it" Laxlaw growled mockingly and went into a spiral that seemed to engulf the whole room with electric sparks and without warning directed it all at Jack.
Jack tried to counter him in resisting the electric shocks by using his own powers to curl it into a ball and hit back at him, but he was too powerful. Then he noticed that every time he tried to duck in the direction of the figurines, the creature became even more protective. He knew he had to get to it as that seemed to be the source of his powers.
But he was becoming drained by the second and could barely hold onto his breath with the intense attack from the creature. He lifted his eyes and saw his mom still wriggling, but with less frequency now, she was obviously losing strength. With tears in his eyes, he made a sharp shift in position and and the creature followed suit, smelling that he was wearing out.
Then Jack made another sharp turn to the left, then right, then up, back left. Frustrated, Laxlaw kept shifting grounds in a bid to catch Jack, till they had switched positions and Laxlaw was on the opposite direction while Jack was in front of the collection box. Out of anger Laxlaw sent a thundering wave of electrons towards Jack who then jumped out of the way and the electrons scattered the figurines.
Laxlaw cried out in agony as he burst into a blinding thunderous reflection. Few seconds later, Jack rushed over to pick up his mom who seemed tired and exhausted. He lifted her to her room and laid her on her bed. As he walked out of the room, he could hear whispers of "Thank you" behind him.
"You're welcome mom" he replied proudly.
On getting to his room, he tried lifting his bed with one hand and ended up almost straining his veins. The power was gone.
Highly imaginative and totally engrossing. You build suspense in layers and pile those layers up to create a tower of intrigue that comes crashing down in perfect response to a happy ending. Beautifully written with lyrical insight, a very engaging read.
I was fascinated by your story, especially when Jack, picking up his mother, took her to his room. When he returned to his bedroom, there was no more power.
This is a wonderful one we have here. It was a heat fight and it's clear that Jack came out victorious.
Imaginative, check, brilliance, check, writing, check...
Thanks boss
I wasn't expecting that fight, it was phenomenal. Good story, my friend. It was entertaining. Regards.
