CRAZY AND LOST

in The Ink Well3 years ago

A crazed scientist and inventor worked frantically in his lab, all he could think of was perfecting his invention and he was thus disconnected from his surroundings.

He could not hear the rat chewing on a piece of dirty cloth nor the heavy rain nor the fierce thunder that came with the rain, he was lost in his work.

His name was Brian Drewski, a soon to be 40 year old popular scientist and inventor who was famed for his numerous life changing inventions which had earned him numerous awards including a nobel prize in physics and chemistry.

One would expect a man of his age to be thinking about getting married and having kids but no, Brian was no ordinary man (at least according to him).

In a recent interview with a journalist, he was asked if he had plans of getting married and interestingly he answered...

I have an IQ of 360, do you think that's normal??..

Nobody on earth reasons like i do, nobody talks like i do and of course nobody is as smart and intelligent as i am.

How do you expect me to stoop so low as to getting married to an intellectually average human and giving birth to another human of average IQ??

The journalist was stunned, this interview was five years ago and he had gotten crazier and cockier since then.

His aging parents worried about him, he had four other siblings who were happily married and he was the oldest amongst them but he refused to heed anyone's advice and get married.

He even went as far as cutting ties with everybody including his family shortly after he met a psychiatrist, he only agreed to meet the psychiatrist so his mother would lay off him.

The session with the psychiatrist did not last long and the psychiatrist concluded that he was definitely lost and confused, according to the psychiatrist...

When i looked into his eyes, i saw nothing he was emotionless and empty even though he claims that he has a high IQ.

The way he reasons and talks is beyond my understanding and in conclusion contrary to his IQ, Mr Drewski is a lost soul, he needs help as soon as possible because he is like a man falling deep into a bottomless pit.

Bryan did not care about what the psychiatrist concluded, he cut off everything and everyone, he stopped picking calls, going for interviews and opening doors for visitors.

He stopped stepping out of his house and he survived on his emergency food supply, he focused on perfecting his time machine and that night, despite the heavy rain fall which would make a grown man sleepy, he was busy inventing a machine.

FOURTY YEARS LATER...

Eighty year old Bryan sat alone in his machine filled living room, he stared at nothing and drool occasionally drop from his mouth.

He was alive but dead, it was exactly like the psychiatrist had predicted he was like a man falling deep into a bottomless pit.

He had no idea how he had survived up to that point and all he wanted was to pass away peacefully in his living room with his beloved inventions by his side.

Bryan started out nicely, he started as a young intelligent boy who loved science but he ended up getting lost in his own work, right now he is an old lonely man whose only wish was to pass away.

THE END

Sort:

A Nobel laureate in chemistry and physics with such a high IQ should be a man capable of directing his own life, Bryan has apparently fallen into a state of apathy for which we do not know the causes. Many geniuses in history have lived a good life, surrounded by love and admiration. What happened in this story that Bryan did not make it. As a reader I am left with that question.
Thank you for writing this story for TIW, @emeka002. Thanks for keeping up the interactions with your fellow community members.

The causes are clearly stated in the story, he was a narcissist who believed that everybody was inferior to him.

I don't think you read this story @theinkwell

Oh what an end to Bryan! If only he had used his IQ to know that marriage and having family would go a long way in helping his future as a man of such honors.

Too bad, he followed his brain so much that he lost his emotions and became heartless to himself.

A sad but really interesting story thanks for sharing
