Mr Philip was basically living two lives, as a science teacher and as a hardcore gambler. People often wondered how he managed both occupations. He didn't let his gambling life affect his teaching job, he was always punctual, jovial and entertaining. He was a very intelligent middle-aged man with well developed beards that covered half of his face, looking into his small, slightly red sulken eyes one would think that he was sick. He wore medicated glasses which did a good job in covering it.
He maintained a good relationship with his students and some of his fellow teachers . He was good at expressing himself which is one of the main reasons why he was employed. Outside his teaching life, he was totally different he wore a very miserable and depressing look, he had few good friends who often advised him about his gambling habits but he never gave them a listening ear.
All the money he had in his bank account or any money that touched his hand went into gambling and drinking and as a result of this he incurred many debts. The same atrocious habit caused his wife in divorcing him and leaving their 2(two) year old marriage. He had no child, no property of his own,his mother and sister residing in the village were his only family, he lived alone in his rented apartment.
After a successful day of teaching the course he loved, he matched down to the gambling arena. The gambling arena was spacious and
had a good lightening with a mixture of different colors of light, It had a bar, and different casino games, it was managed by a fearful looking man probably in his early forties. He always sat on a huge chair on the stage of the arena where he could see everything and everyone in the room.
He noticed Mr Philips when he entered and bumped into a suspicious looking young man before he joined a group of people sitting at a gambling table. The game started, cards were distributed to players, he staked the only money he had on him which was borrowed from a friend. Although he had been into gambling for more than 4 years, he still wasn't a pro with the cards. The few games and money he won were used to start another game. He rarely took any tangible amount of money home with him.
But he had a good feeling that day, he was in high spirits. The game went on for about 10 minutes before Philp suddenly shouted.....
“ I WON !!!!, I WON !!!!!, I CAN'T BELIEVE I WON !!!!”.
He caught the attention of everyone in the room including the suspicious looking young man who sat at a corner studying the movements of every living thing in the room.
A crowd gathered at the table and there was noise everywhere before the captain(the manager of the gambling arena) stepped in ..
“what's going on here ????”, he asked in his mighty voice.
“Philip just won a huge amount of
money for the first time” answered
one the long time players.
“Is that so ???, Then he should stay and continue the game”, declared the captain.
Mr Philip declined and said he wanted to go with the money. The captain wasn't in agreement with him so he ordered some bouncers to force Mr Philip to sit and continue the game. As they were struggling with him, the police raided the room. Philp saw this as an opportunity and joined some of the players that ran on sighting the police. Turns out that the suspicious looking man was a spy sent by the police to confirm if the reports on the arena dealing with drugs was true. The young spy was Daniel by name and he affirmed to noticing some people dealing with a white substance. The people remaining in the room were searched including the captain and some drugs were found on them, they were immediately arrested.
After Mr Philips got home safely, few weeks later he settled his debts and booked a flight and left the country to start up a business and change his life for the better.
THE END.
That's the trouble with gambling, one never knows when to stop. It was strange for the manager to have forced Mr Philips to continue playing. Still, Mr Philips seemed to have mastered that double life for the school to have kept him on without a problem, and it's a shame that his private life and finances were affected. The distraction of the spy and police raid turned out to have a positive effect and the perfect timing for Mr Philip to start a new life:)
