I was just a fresh graduate, who just left school seeking for what to do so that I will not be idle, you know this saying “an idle mind is a devil's workshop”,
So, I decided to go job hunting. I went to the post office and on getting there, there were many vacancies and I decided to check them out. As I was checking, I stumbled on one particular vacancy that drew my attention so I decided to give it a try. I called the number that was attached to it and the person (a man) responded with a cheerful voice saying,
“Hello, who is on the line” I responded by saying “my name is Faith. I saw a vacancy with this number at the post office and I decided to call,’’ the man on the other end replied with an ”okay”. He also told me to send my curriculum vitae (CV) to the email address provided. I said my thanks and hung up.
Immediately I hung up and proceeded to send my CV to the email address. I waited for one week but there was no response from him, so I decided to try again.
One fateful evening, whileI was lying down and watching a movie with my phone, my phone rang but it was a strange number. I picked it and the voice I heard was that of a male.
“Hello, am I speaking with Faith Wellington?”
”Yes, I replied”.
”Okay, good. You are to come to the office on Monday by 8:00am to resume work” and he dropped the call.
I was happy and could not wait for Monday to come. I ironed my clothes, polished my black leather shoes and got all I needed ready for Monday.
Monday finally came and I prepared myself on time so that I won't be late on my first day. At about 7:30 am, I was already in front of the office building.
The security guard let me in and I waited at the reception, for my boss to show up. While seated, I perused the office with my eyes, noticing that it was a small firm. However, it was doing well.
By 9am, the man I spoke with, whom I presumed to be my boss, arrived with his driver and he asked me into his office. When we got in, he began by first apologizing for making me wait that long.
After the apology, he began by asking me some personal questions which I answered honestly. He asked about work experience but I told him that this was going to be my first work, hence no experience. I assured him that I was a fast learner who could organize things and that he would not regret giving me a trial.
For the first month in the office,. I felt that the work was stressful because my boss was not making it easy for me, he would give me files and other documents to sort out and put them in their appropriate places.
But I proved to him that I was capable and organized. He never got a chance to query me despite the tedious workload.
One fateful afternoon, I was in my office working when my boss walked in and told me that I would have to go and represent him the following day in a meeting with a client in another branch and he left. I was left there thinking about what I would do because I knew that this was a test given my boss who believed that I would not be able to do it.
So when I got home that evening, I had to do some research on the necessary things that I will be asked concerning the company and all I needed was ready for the meeting the following day. The next morning I got up early and prepared myself for the meeting.
On getting to the place, I was received by the secretary and taken to the conference room. I was nervous at first but somehow a wave of boldness entered me as I went into the conference room. I met three men sitting and my boss was there as well.
I was shocked but I did not let it show. The meeting started and they asked me several questions which I answered correctly, to my boss's surprise because he thought I was not the sharpest tool in the shed
On our way back, he said to me "I was only testing you but you surprised and impressed me. I am pleased with your performance”*.
”Thank you sir, I replied smiling”.

Some times I feel like if you are doing a good job they will want to test you not because they think you are not good but because they think you are and want proof. That way you can keep your mind more positive and give them a better proof.
