Everyone knows that being a father is a tough job. They have to be a strong pillar to protect other family members, on the other hand they also have to observe and supervise their child's development so they don't go astray, and that's not an easy job. One of the most difficult phases that a parent like me has to go through is when a child is entering their teens. It's a time when our kids will rebel and learn to make decisions, I've been through that with my son Josh, and now we learn that we need each other as a family.
One of the fights I remember the most between us was when Josh was in his sophomore year of college. That time he insisted on going to a nightclub with his friends late at night, I didn't give Josh permission to go because I had a bad opinion about nightclubs, drinking, dancing until drunk and seductive dancing women.
“I'm not a kid anymore that you can order to take a nap! I need freedom like my other friends!” he screamed at me, showing the veins in his neck.
“I know what's best for you! You think going at 10 pm to a nightclub like this is freedom? Don't expect to leave this house young man!” when anger filled my body, I saw a drop of tear that seemed to be coming out soon from Josh's eyes. I didn't even realize where’s my mistake is, he hurriedly left the living room where we were fighting. Entered his room and slammed the door loudly. At that time the atmosphere became awkward, we didn't even talk again for 3 days.
I totally understand that Josh is still a kid to me. He is the type of kid who doesn't want to be outdone by the others. When I have a difference of opinion with Josh, that's where our fights will start again, even the little things. for example when there was a meeting with parents at school, Josh told me to wear a shirt with a tie so that my appearance would look different, but I insisted on wearing my clothes as usual, like my favorite shirt and fedora hat, but he even opposed my decision, maybe he would look embarrassed if he had a father whose as messy as me. This attitude made Josh very childish, he only cared about himself without paying attention to other people's feelings.
But now, time has really changed everything, my little Josh has changed since he met Aleena, his college friend and heart crush. I don't know how the feeling of love changes people, but the effect Josh felt when he opened his heart to her was an unnatural change. He become much more friendly than before, willing to listen and dare to make decisions with mature thoughts. I know he has climbed a stairs to adulthood that makes me proud. And my ecstatic feeling peaked when he wanted to marry Aleena and wanted to have a family with her. He really thought about the decision carefully and wisely.
When he was sitting alone on the front porch of the house, I came over to him while bringing him warm chocolate. I saw his slender shoulders and back, showing that he wasn’t just a child anymore but a real man.
"Listen to this old man son, being a husband is not just living happily ever after with your wife like in a drama. In the future there will be many unpredictable household problems. A husband is required to always provide a way out and guide a wife in dealing with problems. Beside that, you will also learn about the bitterness of the world, the difficulty to earn a money and working every day to support your own family, I hope you already know all of that son!”
He was silent for a moment then closed his eyes. My explanation may be a bit heavy for him.
"I understand dad, and I'm ready for it all!" Josh suddenly picked up on everything I said while I was thinking that maybe he would back down.
When their wedding ceremony started, I couldn't stop staring at Josh and Aleena dressed all in white, as if I was being attacked by an optical illusion watching an angel in front of my eyes make a sacred promise to live together forever. I'm sure Aleena will be the happiest bride because she has chosen Josh, my son as her life partner.
In my mind flashed “Hufftt! Finally my job as a father is done here! Have I been a good father to Josh? I hope so because I should have prepared myself to become a grandfather soon and I’m sure it’s the hardest job rather than just being a father!”
