A Graceful New Beginning: From Heartbreak to Heaven’s Match

"Can't you see I just moved to a new city? I have no friends or know what to do next, and all you care about is if there are other ladies around me. I don't even know my bearing; why should I care about ladies?" I said angrily on the phone to Olamide, who later turned out to be my ex after our argument.

She screamed on the phone while I was speaking, cutting me off to share her thoughts. "The way you're talking, it sounds like you've already found someone else." Her statement made me even angrier, so I replied, "Yes, I found someone else," just to end the conversation. I was so tired of having this discussion repeatedly because of her insecurities.

"So you found someone else, and you arrived in the city just two weeks ago. I knew you were cheating on me. You will never find someone better than me," Olamide said angrily and ended the call before I could say anything. She ended the call.

"Well, she refused to hear me out, so I would let her be," was my thought until two days became a week and one week a month. After a few months, ego and pride kicked in, and we both decided not to talk to each other, which led to our breakup.

It felt like what she said was right because I had not seen anyone like her or spoken to any other lady, probably because I was still entangled with my feelings for her. I already gave up on love. After a lot of months had passed, I decided to go visit my parents, who happened to be in the same city as Olamide. I traveled a very long distance to get home.

"How was your journey and the people of Abuja?" My dad asked, standing at my bedroom door with one hand casually tucked into his pocket.

"It was fine, sir," I replied as I pulled a fresh set of clothes from my bag. "The bus was nice, but the roads were bad. We spent extra time on the road because of it."

"Okay, when you’re done, come downstairs so we can watch the match together," he said before heading back downstairs.

Later that evening, after some much-needed relaxation, life surprised me. I was standing outside our gate when I saw a beautiful lady walk past. She was putting on a white blouse and a pair of black skin-tight trousers. She was looking at me, but I never noticed her until our eyes met. She looked so familiar, but I couldn't remember where I had met her before.

"Fash, right?" She said, and this confirmed my thoughts.

"Grace, is that you?" I said in surprise because she looked nothing like the Grace I knew some years ago.

Grace was a friend to my friend, who I never noticed back in school. She visits my place with her friends, who are my friends, but I haven't spoken to her; I would only wave her from afar or speak to her when we are within a whispering range. She never got my attention in any way until that night.

"Whaoo, you are a big boy now. Look at those beards and heights. You weren't this tall before, Fash," she said with a big smile on her face.

"I still can't believe I am seeing you right now. I thought everyone already left Ogijo. What are you still doing in this area?" I responded.

"What about you? What are you doing in this area? But seriously, Fash, you look so different I could hardly recognize you. Your girlfriend must be taking care of you." She said jokily

"What, girlfriend? Single men like me can't relax again, right? I am just here to visit my parents and take some fresh air before going back into the house," I said with a smile on my face, too.

We began talking without noticing how much time had passed. Our conversation flowed effortlessly as if we had known each other for a long time. In a way, we did, yet we had never truly communicated until that night. It felt like we were finally expressing all the words we never said to ourselves when we were little.

"It's late already, and I think I shouldn't keep you out this late," I said to her after seeing what time it was on my phone.

"What is the time saying?" Grace asked with a little worried face.

"It's past 10 p.m.," I answered.

"What?! I didn't know my time was far spent. My mom will scream at me tonight. Good night," she said, running in the opposite direction as I shouted goodnight back at her.

As soon as I got back into my room, I took out my phone and searched for her on Facebook. I do see her posts, but I hardly comment on them. After I found her profile, I sent her "Hi," and immediately there was a response. We started chatting until daybreak.

The following morning, we set a date, met, and continued our conversation. I got to know more things about her, and she did the same, too. I was about to reach for the salt on the table, and she did, too, without realizing I wanted to do the same. Our hands touched, and then I looked at her, and her eyes met mine. We stared at each other for some seconds; then, I pulled my hand back with a smile on my face.

A day turned into a week, a week, and a month, and as time went on, we started dating. After we started dating, all my worries melted at her beauty; my sorrow flee at the sight of her smile; she was my strength in my time of weakness, and her presence alone was the only thing I needed to keep happiness in my soul. We did things together, and it felt like I had known her my whole life. We were a match made from heaven.

One evening, as we sat on my dad's balcony, She whispered into my ear, "I promise to love you forever because you are the best gift from God."

I smiled and said to her, "You are the best thing that has ever happened to me." We stay there as we watch the sunset.

The End.
