Old Love

in The Ink Well5 days ago

"My dad would love you," Gabby said to Julie as they prepared to retire for the night. "Who doesn't love you?"
She smiled, her perfectly shaped dentition came into full display and her face brightened up.

They planned to visit Gabby's parents the next day and Julie was worried that they may not like her.

Julie was a very beautiful lady, fair as day with a spotless skin, she was about 5 foot in height with an hourglass shape, the type that made men unable to resist taking a second look. She was the envy of most women and many skin care brands wanted her to be their model yet amidst all this, she somehow managed to be lacking in confidence.

"Welcome," the maid said when they arrived the house the next day. "Your dad is upstairs, let me go and inform him that you have arrived."

Shortly after, Gabby's Dad, Engr. Peter came down. He walked with grace and ease, watching Julie as he took each step, he seemed impressed by what he saw.

"What's your name, young lady?" He asked as he sat down into the sofa.
"Julie, sir" she answered feigning a smile.
"My son said you are from Bunu, which family exactly?" Engr Peter enquired. "I worked in Bunu many years ago" he added.
"Delta family" she responded.
"Amazing, what's the name of your mother?"
"Lydia Delta" Julie answered.
"And your dad?" Engr continued probing.
"Barr. Emmanuel Delta"

The atmosphere seemed charged and Gabby observed that his father's countenance was not as bright as usual but he was still taking biodata and as such there was no reason yet to be opposed to him Marrying Julie.

"Daddy, is there any problem?" Gabby queried.
"No, son. I just have nostalgia remembering my days at Bunu, as far back as 1998". Engr Peter answered.

The rest of the day continued with Julie answering the Engineer's questions and throwing a few questions back at him especially with regards to his days at Bunu.
At the end of their visit, Gabby wanted to leave with Julie but his father insisted he comes back to the house so that they can discuss.
Gabby then booked an Uber for Julie to go home with.

"My son, you cannot marry that girl," Peter announced to his son. "She is not from a good family in Bunu. Her fore father's were slaves who settled in Bunu and assumed the Delta name."
This was too much for Gabby to bear, "Daddy, it does not matter. I love her so much and she loves me too. Her fore father's should have no contribution in this marriage. She is no slave!" Gabby defended.
"My decision is final" Engr Peter announced and left the sitting room.

Gabby could not sleep that night and he could not get himself to break the news to Julie. At about 10 pm. He left his father's house to go stay with Julie.
"I was missing you badly," he said when Julie queried his coming back so late.

The next day he left home with the pretense of going to work but drove straight to Bunu to find out for himself what his dad had said.

After much enquiries, he discovered that the Delta family were bonafide members of Bunu with no history of slavery.

Gabby wondered how his dad came about his own information and decided to go home to confront him with his new found knowledge.

"Daddy, good afternoon sir" Gabby greeted upon entering the house.
"You can go ahead and marry her," was the response he received.
Gabby was both confused and relieved with a whole lot of emotions waxing and waning within him.
"Why? What happened? What changed?" Gabby asked confused.
"Don't you want to marry her again?" Peter asked.
"Of course, I want to, I am just wondering what happened."
"Don't worry son, just go and prepare for your wedding, I am in full support."

Gabby was elated and also a bit disappointed that he was not allowed to exhibit the dialogue he had practiced in his head after accumulating so much information about Bunu and the Delta family history.

Julie was surprised to see Gabby looking so happy. "Did you win the lottery?" She asked oblivious of the battle that went on within the past 24 hours.
"Babe, we are getting married!" Gabby screamed, confusing her the more.
"I don't understand, have you been unconscious all these while?" Julie asked confused.

Gabby then explained to her what transpired after she left with the Uber and why he came home very late. He went on to narrate how he travelled to her hometown to carry out an investigation and the result of his investigation. He then narrated his father's strange response when he met him and the numerous unanswered questions.

Few days to the wedding, Gabby went with his Dad went to specially invite one of his friends in government and Gabby seized the opportunity to ask his dad those questions that bothered him.

"Daddy, don't avoid this questions because they have been making my mind go places." Gabby began.
"Ok, my son, what is it?"
"Why did you lie about Julie coming from a slave ancestry and why did you change your stance as quickly as the next day?"

There was a long pause before Peter responded.
"When I was in Bunu, I had a girlfriend, Lydia Zuma. She gave birth to a little girl for me back when I was in Bunu. I could not take the responsibility and so I absconded but I kept monitoring the lady's progress. I discovered she got married and became Lydia Delta. Her husband accepted my child and took her as his own" Engr. Peter paused for a while to observe Gabby's reaction. It was passive but he was listening with great attention.

"When Julie said her mum's name, I suspected she was my child and as such you would not be able to marry her, but I could not think of any better excuse." Peter said.
"Excuse for what?" Gabby asked.
"To buy time and make enquiries because I have not reached out since Lydia got married."
"Ok, what happened then?" Gabby was very inquisitive.
"After our discussion, I began to make enquiries and that was when I discovered that Lydia's first daughter was already married and the one you brought home is her last child and there was no chance of her being my child. That was why I quickly changed my stance and allowed you to go on with the marriage."

Gabby then understood the full details of what had transpired. He was grateful to his dad for answering his questions and more importantly, he had hot gist for his wife.

Oh my God, what a soap opera! Thank goodness it's fiction, although I don't know to what extent this can also happen in reality. Greetings

Yes, some stories should remain as fiction😅
I am glad you enjoyed it.

A story with a good question mark, which made me think that was the reason for the father's refusal and I liked that you managed to give it a good ending.
