Seagull’s Heart

in The Ink Welllast year (edited)

I was down on the beach with a heartbreak so profound that it made me brittle. Shaun had left me for his best friend, a dude; a guy. It was achingly disappointing. It was devastating.

My mind was a turbulent entity, swirling with the impossibility of what he had made me face.

‘My boyfriend was gay’.

I wanted to scream out loud. I wanted to explain to the stars that it wasn’t my fault. After all, wasn’t he born that way?

‘Why did he choose me?’ The abyss of the rabbit hole held me for a moment.

‘Why?’

We used to be best friends. A cooler box of goodies to share under the moonlight on a wave-swept vista. It was sublime.

He and I.

Me and him.

A collaboration of intertwined minds.

God damn, he was clever.

As clever as the sea, ever changing, offering answers to the ultimate questions.

Like a guru, he was. He was brilliant.

How did it happen?

Well…

He was my brother’s best friend.

He was beautiful and intelligent, and he could communicate with his hands, his voice, and his soul.

I fell under his spell, and what a spell it was—eviscerating, upturning, life-changing.

He was Adonis. My Greek God.

Then the seagulls whirled in the gray, gray sky as I sat there waiting for him to come.

He would eventually arrive, but the aroma of a foreign man’s cologne was so evident.

Why, oh, why, was I so stoic in my understanding?

Why?

He would tell the best jokes. He would hold me like porcelain. He mapped out a path for our future. Together!

Together. There was a dream he forged into reality. He held the market to my heart.

I believed him.

Then there was a party. A night of stars, a glowing excitement of fun. We danced, we drank, and we elevated the ordinary.

In a corner, in the dark. In a corner...

There he was, and my soul grew weary.

He was never my man. He was a man’s man.

Wow.
What a terrible shock that must have been and it hurt more finding out the way she did.
I loved your story. 😇

💕❤️

Superb! Not a word too many or too few. And the final sentence...brilliant!

😅 😁 Thank you

Just how many rabbits do you have in that hat of yours? !LOLZ You are the queen of brevity. I don't know how you create so much with so little - every blimmin time... hehe I love your writing, Stylish. And this one... whew... it hits hard no matter who your partner is cheating with... but the questions that are asked of oneself... yep uh huh... And to make things more emotionally heartbreaking, it would seem that the love of his life was the MC's brother - that's going to be a very difficult pill to swallow. !LUV !ALIVE !PIMP

O.O poetic.

Only you could write such a short short story and get away with it, because once again you write and communicate exactly what needs to be said to achieve an impact with the reader, but you do it as always with brevity. This was a wonderful and unique take on the triple prompt. You pack the emotion in... I hope more writers learn from the way in which you approach these challenges... often less is more!

That last line was the cherry on top of a delicious cake. The cake is small anyways and I'm left wanting more but it's beautiful regardless. Filled with loss and betrayal and surprise. Yummy mix indeed. This is amazing @itsostylish and you are too.

A brief but powerful story. From the beginning it reveals the reason for the conflict, puts us in the narrator's shoes so that we empathize with him and takes us to that moment where the bitter truth comes to light. I liked it. Regards.

💕❤️❤️

An excellent story, in a few lines you expressed the feelings of a person when they feel devastated by such a complex situation.

Delighted to read tu historia.
Thanks for sharing.
Good day.

😂😂😂

He was a man’s man.

Great twist on a familiar phrase. You bring the story around nicely, from the beginning where you tell us the problem, through the middle where you explain how it came to be, to end with that smashing line.

A lot of symbolic language without the tear jerking. Nicely done, @itsostylish

What a profound ending 💔
