"Leave!!! You all always leave anyway." Hardy yelled.
Lucy, his girlfriend whom he had been yelling at, packed her bags and came down the stairs to meet him in the living room. His eyes were red with unshed tears, but he didn't beg her to stay.
"You know that I've done nothing but love you, but I can't keep doing this with you. You never believe anything I say to you. I wonder what made you this miserable, but I hope you heal and find your peace." Having said this, she yanked the door open and left the house.
It was quiet, except for the sniffling of Hardy's nose. He had never meant to push her away, but he feared that in the end, she would leave him the same way his parents had left him at a very young age.
At the age of five, Hardy's parents separated. Unlike other divorces where the child could decide who he would want to stay with, in Hardy's case, both parents didn't want him with them.
His father took him in, but after three months, he sent him back to his mother, but she sent him straight to the orphanage, with claims that he'd be too much to handle.
Thus, Hardy grew up without parental care and love, and this made him thrive to become successful, which he achieved.
At the age of 28, after a series of therapy sessions, Hardy decided to let go of the hurt that his parents abandonment had caused him. All this while, he never let anyone close, and this made him a loner. But he decided to change and make new friends, and he was blessed with wonderful people around him, until he proposed to the lady he had ever loved.
"Say yes! Say yes! Say yes!" The crowd chanted.
Hardy was on a knee with a four-carat diamond ring, and he had just proposed to Sarah. They had dated for over three years, and Hardy felt it was right to finally settle with her. He took her on a date, and when she wasn't looking, he got on one knee and proposed to her.
"Oh my goodness!!! Are you being serious right now?" Sarah asked with excitement.
"Yes, Sarah. All I want is to spend the rest of my life with you. I've never wished for anything else." Hardy replied, still on a knee.
Sarah stuck out her hand, and Hardy slipped the ring onto her finger and pulled her into his embrace. The applause from the crowd was exciting, and Hardy never felt happier than he did at that moment.
"Don't you think we're moving too fast?" Sarah asked Hardy. It had already been two months since the engagement, and Hardy wanted them to get married sooner than later, but Sarah felt they were in a rush.
"My love, we aren't moving too fast. You love me, and I love you more than anything in the world. Why wait longer when we can just have our wedding and be together forever?" Hardy tried to convince her, so she could give consent to the wedding date he had in mind.
After a while, Sarah agreed to move on with the wedding plans.
The day for the wedding came, and Hardy was overjoyed. He had spent a lot of money, seeing that his wedding would be the most talked about for months or probably years to come.
Everyone was in church, and Hardy was with the pastor who was supposed to wed them, but Sarah didn't show up. Instead, she sent him a text saying that she wasn't ready for commitment and she couldn't marry him.
It took a lot of effort from his friends to stop Hardy from committing suicide. He was heartbroken, and this reminded him of his parents, who never cared about him.
Because of the hurt that he had experienced from childhood, Hardy shut out completely, and he feared to let anyone close to him. Even after 6 years, Hardy totally abstained from any form of attachment that would interfere with his emotions.
It was on this note that Hardy let Lucy walk out of his life, even though he knew that she really loved and cared for him. The fear that one day she would wake up and leave him couldn't let him love her properly or even have an ounce of trust for her. He always accused her of wanting him to let his guard down so she could hurt him and leave.
On his couch, with tears in his eyes, Hardy wondered if he would ever overcome this kryptonite and let himself experience true love.
