You know how mothers can be your best friend and biggest gist partner/broadcaster? Well my mom wears that crown very proudly. If you never want the cat out of the bag, then you should probably keep an exciting or disappointing news to yourself. In other words if you want your news to remain hidden, telling my mom would be like writing it boldly in the town's notice board.
Well, It all started on a normal afternoon when a guy I've been talking to came to our house. Ok he was a great guy and we were just friends but that day he didn't just come to hang out, he came to see my mom. Bold guy.
My mom sat really tight on her chair waiting for this visitor that specifically wants to see her. He arrived, he sat with my mom for a while and told her straight up that he liked me and wanted her to know about it.
Well this was strange to me because I didn't expect him to say that to my mom especially since we're not yet in a relationship. But let's leave the guy for now!
After he left, I expected my mom to be mad at me for bringing a guy to the house , but to my surprise she seemed excited, she couldn't even hold it in. She turned to me with the teasing grin and said, "Ah ahh, so this girl, you've grown so much that men now want to marry you, you'll soon be someone's wife o" lol 😂 .
Well, I laughed, was a bit embarrassed though, and I also knew my mom too well.
"Biko (please) don't tell anybody o" I said, cause I was already picturing her telling my aunts about it.
"Ok nne don't worry I won't say anything to anyone" she replied, with her hand on her chest like she was making an oath not to tell anyone.
After that she was asking me everything about the guy and we discussed about it too. But let's just say, her little oath didn't last till the next morning.
She sent me to a relative's house who lives close by to get something from her, a quick errand! To my surprise as soon as she opened the door and saw me, her face lit up like it was already my introduction ceremony lol
“So, how’s the guy now? When is the wedding?” she asked, with the 'I know it all' face.
I was speechless, I managed to put on a fake smile, but deep down I was screaming, Mummy!!!
And right there I figured that if she has heard it, then everyone else has too. That small fire had already spread so rapidly. And I knew right there that no one else would have told her except my mom, unless she witnessed the event which I'm sure she didn't. Well, I tried to act normal with my aunt and told her the guy didn't even talk about marriage or anything that deep. I tried so hard to get out of that situation with her and finally I was able to leave with what I came to get.
Later that day I asked my mom about it, trying not to sound too annoyed.
“Mummy, did you tell our auntie about what happened?
She looked at me with her usual most innocent face ever and she said, "Ehh, I only told her na... she's your aunt is she not"
"But I thought we agreed not to tell anyone mom"
"Yes, we agreed — but she's your aunt," she replied, like that made it any better.
Another thing with my mom is that you can never win her over an argument, so you just have to let go as it'll never lead you both anywhere.
I couldn’t even be angry. That’s my mom for you. Warm-hearted, always happy for good news for her children, and well never one to keep juicy news to herself. I should have known better when I told her not to tell anyone. That is just like asking the rain not to fall in August.
So with my mom you learn not to even let her pet the cat in the first place if you don't want the cat out of the bag.
