Lost but Never Forgotten

I had never believed that some friends we make were solely carved out from fate for us until I met someone like Emenike. That guy that stood with me when life was throwing Pebbles at me. He held the umbrella for me when the storms of life came falling heavily.

Just a few months after high school, I needed to get myself busy or learn a trade before I would get admission to the university. Anything at all that could get me busy because I hated being idle. I got this odd job in another state; lucky enough, Emenike was residing in that state, so he offered to harbour me till I was able to stand on my feet or maybe get admission.

I can still remember the screeching sound of the car tyres as it knocked me off my feet on my way to work that early morning. Then I lost consciousness of my whereabouts.

I woke up with fear and pains in my legs, ignorant of what had happened. But as I turned around, there he was, Emenike, by my side, with hands resting gently on mine.

"What happened? I asked. My voice was barely above a whisper.

"Thank God! You're awake," he said, relief flooding his face.

Looking around I got to see I was on a hospital bed.

The room was lit by the sunset from the window. The odour of fresh methylated spirit and disinfectant was strong in that room. My legs felt like I had a three-storey building foundation erected on it, and the pains were unbearable. Then memories of what happened flooded back to me. I shut my eyes and prayed I wasn't dead yet.

But then again, Emenike was by my bedside, with worry etched on his face, were proof I was alive.

"I've called your parents. They'll be here by tomorrow or next", his voice echoed in my head.

Even with my parents arriving the next day. Emenike was still more than a friend to me, he was a lifeline. Picking me up to the restroom and back. His steps were careful not to hit me on the floor. Preparing meals and bringing them to me at the hospital.

When I thought he was done, he would do more.

I remember one night I was so dizzy, then a nurse walked into the room with Emenike. In her hands was a bag of blood.

"Who's that for?" I asked.

"You" he replied with a smile.

I thought it to be one of his jokes and shoved it off.

"I'm serious." He added

"How were you able to afford it? My parents had just left to gather cash for the hospital bill" I replied, still fighting with the dizziness.

"Well, I didn't buy it. I donated. The doctor said the reason for your dizziness is because you lack blood. I can't wait till your parents are back. I had to do something," he explained.

"But you didn’t have to. I'm sure my parents will be back soon"

He cut me off with a stern look. "We’re friends, right? Through thick and thin, remember?"

I fought back the tears welling up in my eyes. I've always heard the phrase through 'thick and thin' but didn't get to understand it till that moment.

After my discharge, life moved on. I quit work, and a few months later, I got accepted into university.

I stayed in touch with Emenike, always calling and texting each other. The friendship remained strong and stronger by the day. Until I was robbed at my present home and lost my phone with all my contacts.

I've tried several times to get his contact through social media and friends. But the numbers I keep getting won't connect. No matter what I did to reconnect with that one guy that taught me a lot about friendship it felt like he turned into a ghost and vanished into thin air.

Sometimes, late at night, I'll pray that life treats him well and keep him safe and happy wherever he is. Till that day we will cross paths again.

Thank you for reading 😊

Friends like Emenike are hard to find.
Going over his way to donate blood actually touched my heart too. He must have felt since he was a match, why don't he do the needful.

A little birdie once said "if we can't find friends who can stick with us, we could be that friend"

I hope you get to find or reach out to him as soon as possible.

He's a gem. And I don't regret ever meeting him. I hope he's doing great.
Thank you for reading 😊.

I also had such a friend who stood by me no matter what. It's sad that we are not in contact because he lives in another city. You should be happy to have such a friend. Keep writing my friend, your write up shows that you have the potential to write great things.

Thank you for the kind words. I truly appreciate it. 😊
