I stood at the corner of the room clutching to my gele which was almost coming off. There was tension in the air. Tiny murmurs could be heard here and there.
The time was already 10 am. Exactly the time stipulated for the wedding, the guests were becoming restless.
Ada my big sister and fiancé, Obinna were already waiting at the venue but the pastor who was to wed them was nowhere to be found.
"Oma this isn't how I expected today to be" Ada said to me while pacing up and down the room. I can see the veins on her face gradually protruding, a clear sign that Ada was confused and stressed by the situation.
"Relax Ada, the groomsman had gone to call him" I tried comforting her.
Just then I saw Okoro the groomsman walk in with a few friends. His face wasn't looking like he had good news at all.
Yet Ada's fiancé asked "Any good news?"
"He said his car broke down. I'm not sure he'll be able to make it on time" Okoro replied, with disappointment on his face.
"Oh no!" Ada let out a cry as I held her down immediately, comforting her.
I watched as Ada's fiancé paced up and down the room like a caged lion. "But there are other pastors on the invite list. His assistants. They should be here, we can substitute them can't we?"
"They were all riding with him in his car to the wedding," the groomsman replied.
"Oh double no!" Ada screamed again.
There was a big silence.
"Any idea on what to do?" The groomsman asked with hands on his head. He was probably out of ideas on what to do next.
"We move to plan b" I replied spontaneously.
"Plan b?" Ada asked, looking up at me "Nobody told me there was a plan b"
"Me too," her fiancé added.
All eyes rested on me. A clear sign that everyone was out of ideas. Silence immediately fell in the room again.
"I mean there's no plan b. I just made that up because I have an idea" I explained.
"Spill it Oma" Ada pressed, she was running out of patience.
"Okay, does it necessarily have to be a pastor that will wed you guys? I mean a pastor is nice but in this case, we're not going to let the wedding end because there's no pastor"
"We're waiting for you to make a point" Ada chipped in, pacing the room now like her fiancé.
I smiled and continued " We have family members out there who have very successful marriages who can officiate the wedding. Just like grandpa and grandma. They've been married for over forty-five or fifty years now and they're still standing strong in their marriage. Besides Grandpa is a retired college chaplain, so I think he's a great substitute for an officiating pastor if not the best because he's family"
By now everyone was already nodding and concurring with what I was saying. Ada and her fiancé stopped pacing the room.
"So I say we go with plan b which is Grandpa" I ended with a smile.
Immediately Ada stood up and gave me a big hug "That's why I wanted you to be present on my wedding day. You always know how to save the day." She said
“I love you sis".
"I love the idea," Ada's fiancé said, giving me a big shake "Thank you" he added.
He turned to his groomsman with a smile and commanded "Get grandpa to the altar, he has a couple to wed."
Immediately, the groomsman left the room.
A few minutes later Ada walked down the aisle to Grandpa and her fiancé who were already waiting.
I watched from the background with tears in my eyes, as Grandpa looked them both in the eye and asked them the big question. Knowing fully well that that might be the last time in a long while I'd get to have a gist partner and secret sharer like Ada with me under the same roof.
"Do you Adannaya, take thee, Obinna, to be your lovely wedded husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, till death we do your part," Grandpa asked
And for a moment all Ada could do was look Obinna in the eye as if to reassure herself she was on the right path. Then with a huge smile, she replied
"Yes I do"
The rest of the reception party was filled with so much dancing, eating, drinking and merrymaking.
Grandpa actually saved the day and it would have been a disaster if the pastor didn't make it because of the traffic and the smart one among them didn't come up with a plan B immediately.
Fortunately, there was a smart one who came up with plan B.
