Lightning and Thunder
They are two mutual things that work simultaneously. After heavy rain or during a heavy rain it is observed that there is lightning and thunder. The lightning comes before thunder, the lighting will show on the sky like a crack before the heavy sound of thunder emerges, it is observed that the longer the lightning the more the sound of the thunder, this creates fear among people especially kids and young persons.
African folktales, beliefs and superstition make this natural occurrence feary.
The Yoruba belief: The god of thunder
In Africa especially Nigeria there is a god known as the god of thunder, it is called "SANGO". The Yoruba people believe that the god of iron has the power to spill out fire when he is angry. Some shamans do consult Sango when they are looking for something or when they rob their valuables to attack and expose the criminal, it works according to their beliefs as they will get the result they wanted.
This has made people from that region shun some social vices as they also believe that they will be a ghost if SANGO is consulted for the illegal act they engage in.
Anxiety Related to lightning
John is a ten years old boy who has just returned to his parents in the city. He spent more than six years with his grandparents in the village. He listens to his grandparents advice, lectures and moonlight stories. During his stay in the city, he always clings to the wall whenever he observes lightning or hears the sound of thunder. His parents noticed this and called him to question his reaction whenever there was lightning. He responded that his action was as a result of his experience in the village.
When John was seven years old the village is experiencing a lot of robbery attack and loss of property to some certain Armed robbers, after a long period of terrible event, the village elders gather together to seek Sango help as this will expose the evil doer and warn people that have the mindset of extorting others too.
A Thunder strike was experienced after a heavy rain that lasted for about two hours. People were scared, some thought the world was coming to an end, some could not bear the sound. Few moments later news of the thieves exposed by the thunder strike was everywhere, people gathered to confirm the news, at the end five members of the village were exposed with the properties they carted away. This brings an end to the robbery attack in the village. Since that event, John could not resist the trauma and the anxiety of lightening emerges.
