Jane's Exit

in The Ink Well2 years ago (edited)

I and Jane have been close friends since forever. We have spent nearly our entire lives together. We attended the same high school and we were about to go to college together. I had imagined myself fighting dragons, slaying demons and going to wars but I had never imagined my life without Jane. The love I had for her was more than I could ever express. It was beyond description and I was super excited to have her in my circle.

Jane and I were supposed to go to the Cinema to see a movie and I was super excited. We'd been waiting for the sequel of the Marvel series and it had finally been released and I couldnt wait. We were supposed to meet at the event center just by the corner of her house before heading out to the Cinema. I picked out a beautiful plain yellow dress for the outing.

The dress was bought by my aunt who just got married recently. She's was my favorite aunt and had supplied me more clothes than I could actually count. My mum would always tell Aunt Laura that I had enough clothes to last a life time but she was never dissuaded as she would still send more the next time.

The sound of my alarm woke me up that morning. I quickly got up and rushed through my chores because Jane and I were set to depart by 10am. I quickly rushed through my chores. I managed to finish up all cleaning before 8am so I quickly rushed to the bathroom to clean up and look beautiful for the beautiful day.

By 9:30 I messaged Jane and set out to meet with her at our arranged spot. Got there at exactly 9:45 and I was happy I made it in time so I could take some selfies for my memorabilia. It was 10 already and Jane was nowhere in sight. I still wasn't perturbed cos I just assumed she was running late. It was almost 11, still no sign of Jane nor was her phone connecting. I was already getting worried cos the movie was to start at 12:45pm and if we were to make it in time for snacks and pictures at the Cinema we should have left already.

After 1hr30mins of waiting, I felt my phone chime. It was a text from Jane. "I'm sorry I couldn't make it, something came up. Don't be mad, I love you". A part of me was glad that she had finally reached out because I had started to process and entertain evil thoughts like a car crash or an accident or even something worse. Mixed feelings ran through me as I was both happy that my friend was safe and then sad that we couldn't go to the Cinema anymore.

Waiting on our admission into college gave us enough time on our hands cos we almost had nothing serious to do. I decided to visit Jane at her house because I had not seen her since she bailed on me the other day. Getting to her house, she was in her room and I walked in and sat on her bed. We talked about alot of things both girly and more. Immediately I brought up the reason behind her bailing out on me, she started stuttering and could barely say anything. A few hours later, I got up to head home.

I couldn't help but think that Jane was keeping a secret from me. The thought of it churned my stomach and it was distateful. Why would she keep something from me? We've been friends since like forever. I couldn't tell exactly what it was but I was so certain that she was hiding something.

Ella! Ella! I rushed down stairs as fast as I could at the sound of my mother's voice. There was so much excitement in her voice that I knew she had an important news to tell me about. On getting downstairs, she announced to me that my Aunt Laura was visiting us for the weekend. My joy knew no bounds and I was just jumping and dancing all over.

It was so good to see Aunt Laura after her wedding. She was looking prettier so much that I was even considering marriage. It was there during dinner that I heard what shocked me. My mom asked me why I didn't tell her that Jane had gotten her admission letter and was already preparing to leave for OAU. The clang on my plate was what brought me back from trance as I realized my fork had fallen on my plate.

It was unbelievable that my friend since childhood would keep such a secret from me. I literally cried my eyes out that night and couldn't sleep. Apparently she bailed on our outing because she had to go shopping for her bed and other utensils for college. I was devastated that my friend would keep the secret of her success from me.

Weeks after she left for OAU, and I didn'tget a phone call from her. Apparently she had moved on and left me behind. I guess she never planned on telling me at all. I eventually dropped all hopes that we could possibly still come back together. It was the end of what could have been.

Friendships can end for many reasons, but an inexplicable one often hurts the most. It seems there was no reason for her not to give you an explanation and give you the opportunity to congratulate her. She seemed to see her entrance into college as a time to cut ties with her past.
