The young man liked to wear a pair of loose-fitting boots with the heels always attached while the front seemed to be loose in a V shape. He was tall and skinny like an assembled rifle that was always wedged between his arms and ribs. He was stiff, always standing on alert right next to the commander like a treasure guard who wouldn't let anyone get close. When the commander was telling his jokes in front of the people, the young man would also laugh with narrowed eyes.

The commander's jokes actually sounded dry and tended to be pushy, but people still laughed out of respect for the leadership of the partisans. The commander liked to stick a havana cigar in his mouth too, and when the tip of his cigar caught fire, he would start telling stories about his experiences during the guerrilla or how he devised a strategy to outwit Gobierno's troops. Thanks to his skill in strategizing and the ability to memorize every inch of the forest, he and his troops managed to push Gobierno's troops until they were trapped in a place where many Árbol de Leche Maria trees grew. The place has become a graveyard for the government troops, so the commander told the story very passionately.

About his ability it is not nonsense, even he was nicknamed Rey de la Selva alias the king of the jungle by local residents. Especially at night, when his eyes can be sharper than the eyes of an eagle ready to hunt its prey on the battlefield. Two things that are very important in guerrilla are mastering the terrain, including reading natural signs and the ability to strategize, especially in making deceitful traps. The commander had it all, and now, they were celebrating victory by pouring each other's try libre in a bar out of the reach of the government.

"The forest is us. For victory!" he said proudly as he raised his glass over his head and pointed it at the rest of the people in the bar. Everyone followed along saying "Lubentium ad victoriam" in chorus. It was at the bar owned by a local who was a supporter of the partisan movement that I first met Martinez, the tall, skinny young man with loose-fitting shoes I mentioned earlier. The days that followed were very beautiful, because we fell in love with each other.

However, this year the partisan movement has become increasingly visible without hesitation following the firing of a gun for the first time in decades after the country's existence after the first uprising which also aimed to bring down the ruling regime. Another consequence of all of this is that my and Martinez's wedding plans have gone awry because my boyfriend is assigned to stay by the commander's side, wherever he is.

Every day things got more serious, even for the revolution, at first I still couldn't believe that I was in the middle of a war that was about to explode. Previously, the underground movement and dark propaganda had been going on clandestinely in the hands of young intellectuals which gradually resulted in the presence of a new partisan diaspora base and formed pockets of resistance on the periphery.

"Can't we just live like this, without going to war with the government?" I asked my father.

"Oh, my little girl, your father promised you will marry Martinez as soon as our government takes over."

I was just silent. I don't believe what my father said. I've been getting even more restless lately.

"I like that kid. You know Tania? Martinez is quite tough on the guerrilla field. In the woods he's like a panther." said my father.

"I don't think he can dodge a bullet, father. Not even a panther can dodge a bullet."

Some of our strongholds have been taken, so why did my father, the commander, stay put. I even thought that it would be better for him to give himself up and bury all his dreams.

However, one day I found myself on the bed. When I woke up, the people in front of me were only two people dressed as nurses.

"Where am I?"

"Where are you?" the nurse asked again.

"Ho-ho-ho, you're at home, Tania."

"Why am I tied up?" Damn, it feels like my hands are too weak. I'm not as strong as I used to be.

Oh, no, why does the skin on my arms look slack like a granny's skin. I began to suspect, then immediately touched my cheeks.

"No!" I was shocked.

"Hey, hey, calm down Tania, you know, you're really old. You were just dreaming. It's just the past. It's all gone. Look." one of the nurses handed him a diary:

The young man likes to wear a pair of loose-fitting boots with the heels always attached while the front looks loose in a V shape. He is tall and thin like an assembled rifle that is always wedged between his arms and ribs.

"Look, that's what you wrote. It's been a long time. You're just going through the worst phase of your old age recently," explained the nurse.

"You mean?"

"This is a hospital, Tania. A mental hospital."

"But-"

"—go to sleep, Tania. You woke the whole hospital just now."

The two nurses came out. They came out through a hallway filled with patient rooms on either side. The hospital hallway was quiet. The light is dim. Only installed one per corner. You know, those two female nurses pissed me off. I even hate them. They thought they were the prettiest in the ward, always wearing skirts so tight that their buttocks poked out wildly. You can't imagine how red the lipstick they are wearing. Even in the empty hospital hallways they walked as if they were on a cat walk. The two nurses didn't know, I could have killed them because I wrote this story. Ha ha ha.

Sort:

Oh my gosh, she lives partly in the past, through dreams and memories. She seemed to accept this when the nurses woke her up... and just moved on!

@jayna | I feel sorry for Tania and for myself. Because actually I have failed to make Tania happy in the story. I have thwarted his dream.

Thanks for keeping up the interaction with the other writers.A gritty story that plays between an unacceptable reality and escape into madness. Thanks for posting it on @theinkwell, @mosin-nagant.

show must go on, right? Thank you very much for curating it.@theinkwell | Yes, actually, at first, it was just a story that didn't have an ending and I was dealing with a dead end. But,

I love stories like this one - where you don't know what's real and what isn't.

A really cool idea my dude, I look forward to reading your other writing. 🙂
