One of the news that gets students to shiver and tremble down here is the news that results have been pasted or that results from the previous semester are out and will be pasted soon. Funny how even when you know you did very well the previous semester, you still feel some chills flow down your spine, and your mood swings immediately as you are left wondering what it would feel like to carry over a course, and you try to picture the stress you would undergo to rewrite the course, and that alone is enough to scare you and cause you to feel some kind of way until you finally set your eyes on the result and confirm for yourself that you passed all your courses.
Whenever a student hears results are about to be pasted, they start to re-evaluate all the courses and try to remember how the exams went and if they did well, so they know what to expect, and that alone causes their fear to heighten, and the only way they become calm is either someone talks them out of it or they are left to worry until they get to see the result and confirm everything is good.
It was a Sunday morning, and I was all happy, vibing to a song from my music player and looking forward to what the day had to offer, but all that went away in a split second after a phone call. Grrrrrgrrrrr, my phone rang.
"Hey Kachi, good morning." Dera greeted the moment I picked up the call.
"Good morning, bro, this one you are acting unlike you. You even greeted; that is unusual." I responded knowing fully well our phone calls, first of all, start with teasing each other and laughing before getting to business, but him greeting without teasing meant something was wrong.
"You are not online; that is why I called. Our course adviser has just been added to the departmental WhatsApp group, and he passed an announcement that we should all come to the office tomorrow to see our result from last semester." Dera responded, sounding really worried, and hearing this, my mood and high spirits went down to zero, but I had to find a way to make him feel better.
"Is that why you sound so worried? Is there any course you feel you did not do well in? Is there any course you are scared of or feel you will fail?" I asked with my own heart pounding so fast because this news puts every student under a lot of pressure.
"No, bro, but you know how this thing works: you can have hope everything is good and okay only to get there and see something else." Dera said, sounding even more worried, and I knew I had to help blow away his cobwebs while I had mine to deal with because I felt exactly the same way he felt, if not worse, but for the fact he called me, which meant he needed me to blow his cobwebs away, and probably in the process of helping with his, mine would be blown away too.
"You really need to calm down, bro. Don't kill yourself with worries and thinking now, and in the end, it turns out to be that you did all that for nothing. Are you not a bookworm?" I teased "Keep all these worries aside, and let's talk about how Manchester United lost their match yesterday." I suggested since he is a Chelsea fan and I am a Manchester United fan, and as a Chelsea fan, Manchester United losing or not performing well is always a delight to him.
"Manchester United really needs to improve; despite getting a new coach, you guys are still performing below expectations. Come and support Chelsea, so you too can experience peace because it is obvious you haven't had any peace for like two years now." Dera said, laughing.
The argument and conversation about football went on and on for so long, and we managed to blow away the cobwebs, forgetting our worries; the following day we checked our results, and it came out good too.
Ah ah
That's a cool way to calm your friend down and it worked out well.
