Samuel, who has been out of the country for years, finally got the chance to visit home again. He left home at a very young age for school, and after school, he was offered a job that stopped him from coming home and kept him busy for so many years. Everyone was excited when he called to inform them he took a leave from work and will be coming home to spend some time with them. They all looked forward to the day he told them he would be coming home, and they all could not wait to see the handsome young man he has grown into as well as to hear his story and how he managed to cope all these years with no family nearby.
Finally it was the day Samuel told his family he would be coming back, and they all had the house fixed and well arranged to celebrate his return. Grrrgrrr Samuel's father's (Mr. David) phone rang, and looking at the screen, seeing it was Samuel, he rushed to pick up, hoping to hear he was at the airport and needed to be picked up.
"Hello, Dad, How are you all doing today?" Samuel asked over the phone.
"We are doing okay." Mr. David responded reluctantly since that was not what he was expecting to hear: "So tell me, are you at the airport because it does not sound like it?" Mr. David asked
"Well, you see, Dad, that is exactly why I called. My flight will be delayed for a day or two because of the weather. I know you all don't want to hear that bit; it is really my fault." Samuel said, explaining why he was not already at the airport waiting to be picked.
"We all thought we would get to see you today, son," Mr. David said as the whole excitement and smile on the face of his siblings and mother faded. "So we will see you in two days?" Mr. David asked
"Yes, Dad, I just hope the weather clears up and it is safe to travel; you will definitely see me in two days time." Samuel assured his father.
After the phone call, Mr. David had to explain to the rest of the family why Samuel couldn't make it, though they were sad they had to wait for two extra days before they got to see him, but all understood the reason for the delay. It felt like they were looking at the clock, waiting for the day Samuel promised to return. They checked the time and knew he should be awake and must have been en route to the airport already, and then David called, putting the phone on loudspeaker so that everyone could hear what he had to say.
"Hello Dad, I am already at the airport and should be home by evening if things work out as planned." Samuel said on picking up the call, knowing that is exactly why they called.
"Exactly what I want to hear. I will be expecting you, my son." Mrs. David said as she rushed to pick up the phone and talk to him in private.
"So how about the rest of us?" Mr. David's and Samuel's siblings asked, looking at her, but she did not even bother to respond as she was busy talking to her son.
Since they already did a thorough cleanup earlier, all they had to do was a little cleanup to ensure that the house was in order while waiting for his arrival, and it was evening. Everyone was excited as they hopped into the car to go wait for him at the airport. On arrival, his mom was the first to spot him and immediately rushed to hug him since they had a bet that whoever was first to see him and touch him would be given the money they all staked.
"How have you been, my son?" Mrs. David asked, "See how big you have grown, oh, my little boy." Mrs. David added
"I am fine, Mom. How have you all been? And less, I forget, did you prepare afang soup at home? Because that soup is the taste of home I have been missing for so many years?" Samuel asked, looking his mom in the eye.
"You should know what I am capable of doing by now, my dear. I have a fufu soup waiting for you back home. Let's just get home." Mrs. David responded.
Throughout the drive home, they kept asking Samuel questions, and he was giving them the answers they needed while he asked his own questions too. Everyone was excited; Samuel was excited to be home again after so many years, and his entire family was excited to see him again. They got home, and Samuel was served hot, steaming afang soup as promised.
"Hmmmmm, afang soup, how much I have missed home." Samuel said as he inhaled the vapor and aroma from the soup.
This was a nice read. You described that feeling of expectation well. My heart raced whenever you mentioned a phone call. Reunion is a big family event.
