After high school, I decided to get a job since I had a lot of needs that needed attention, and my parents had a lot going on, and my needs were the least of their concerns. I kept complaining, but my complaints did not yield any result, and I started applying for different jobs. I had my application letter written and dropped at every firm that needed staff. After so many applications, I was offered a job at a sachet water producing company. This job was way more stressful than I thought, and at a point I started regretting ever getting a job, but I realized that is one of the things that comes with adulthood, as well as if you want to attend to your needs, then you must be willing to make sacrifices.
I sacrificed all of my time as the job required me to report to the factory at 4am without knowing when I would be free or when I would be allowed to go back; some days when the workload was much, we closed by 10pm or even 11pm. Then I was living in the same house with my family but could go days without seeing them, and they too wouldn't see me because before they woke up, I was out of the house, and before I came back, they must have gone to bed. I was that busy, and even friends started complaining about how we no longer spent time together, and because of a faulty generator, I happened to close at around 2pm one Thursday, and on my way home, I met friends at a spot chilling, eating fried meat, and having fun.
"Hey Kachi, come and join us; don't forget that it has been a while since we had fun together." Emmanuel, my friend, said on seeing me.
"I am extremely tired and would love to go home and rest at least so I can prepare for work tomorrow." I responded.
"We won't be here for long, just come." Another friend said, dragging me by the hand.
While we were there, another set of friends pulled out a cigarette and were smoking it when a man that lives in my neighborhood passed by. We greeted, and he responded like all was well, but I did not know he had other plans. "At least I have spent some time with you guys; it is time for me to go home." I said as I stood up to leave.
"I wonder when next we will get to see you again." Emmanuel said
"Bye, guys," I said as I left.
I got home, and everybody was really happy to see me. For the first time in a long time, they got to see me during the day. While they were still happy to see me, we heard a knock on the door.
"Is your mother around? Tell her that I want to see her." The man at the door said to my sister.
I immediately rushed to look through the window, and it was the man from earlier who passed when those guys were smoking. "Mr. Victor, good evening." My mom greeted
"Good evening, ma. I came to you with a complaint; you know I cannot stay back and watch your kids tread on the wrong path, just as I know you will not want that for them." Mr. Victor said
"I hope all is well? Did any of the children do something wrong?" My mom asked
"I don't know how to say it, but do you by any chance know that your son Kachi smokes? I just saw it for myself this afternoon." Mr. Victor
"Jesus Christ, what are you telling me, Mr. Victor? There has to be a mix-up somewhere; I know what my son is capable of doing. Thank God he just came back; let me call him out. Kachi, kachi." My mom called out.
"Mum, I am here." I said as I came out to meet them.
"Mr. Victor said he saw you smoke, and he has confirmed that you do smoke. Tell me, is what he is saying not true?" My mom asked, looking me in the eye.
"No, Mom, I don't smoke. I was only hanging out with friends, and other people were smoking there. That's what he saw, and I greeted him just to be clear, but clearly he did not get my reason for greeting him, so he will see me. If I was smoking or doing anything wrong, I would dodge and try to avoid him seeing me." I said
"You see, Mr. Victor, I told you there was a mix-up somewhere. Maybe you should have gone close to confirm what you thought you saw, but anyway, thank you for looking for my kids." My mom appreciated him.
"Mind the type of place you go to as well as the type of company you keep because it is believed that birds of the same feathers flock together. It is hard to believe that you are in a place where they were smoking and you were not, or you don't do it at all." Mr. Victor advised
"I will always remember this advice; thank you, sir." I responded as I went back inside.
He didn't do anything wrong just that he would have been sure before opening his mouth too wide.
However, one should watch the friends they keep.
Exactly, I get his point and like you said he should have confirmed it.
Good one. Truly a mixed up.
