CONFESSIONS

in The Ink Well14 days ago

Sarah flopped down on her bed exhausted. Everything was just going so wrong she didn't know where to begin. These past few days had been quite difficult for her. She couldn't stop the feelings of regret she kept on feeling, when she realized that Kelvin was indeed a major part of her life, and it seemed like she was about to loose him for good. But she did the right thing at that moment, so why then did it feel so wrong, she thought to herself.

It was the weekend, and Sarah had locked herself up in her room, not in the mood to talk to anyone in particular. Her mother, Jenna, had asked her countless times this week if she was okay, and she had answered yes, although she knew her mom wasn't quite convinced. How her mum could tell when something was wrong with her was a wonder to Sarah.

“If you need someone to talk to, dear, I’m always here." Her mother said with concern

However, this time, Sarah seemed to know not what was wrong with her. All she knew was that she missed Kelvin much more than she expected to have.

Sarah and Kelvin were friends, best of friends, I dare say. Although their relationship was platonic, there was this unhidden chemistry between them. They reveled in each other's company and cared a whole lot for one another. They had been friends for three years, but it seemed like they knew one another right for ages. The way they acted in complete sync with one another was a thing of wonder. No, there was never a secret between them. They told each other everything.

However, things took a different turn when Kelvin finally decided to her. The truth is that he had been in love with her for a long time now. He didn't know when it started but realized it one Friday night when they had gone out with their friends to a party. That night, while he watched her dance with some random guy she had just met three weeks ago, he couldn't help the jealousy that consumed him. That was the turning point for him. He found himself wanting to protect her from all the evil out in the world. She was just too beautiful and innocent not to see the evil intentions of those guys who were always coming after her. He found himself wanting all of her attention. It was selfish, yet he couldn't help it. He had fallen deep for her her. However, the fear of losing this their friendship, made him his how he truly felt about her.

However, recently things were becoming too much for him to bear. Especially as Sarah was currently dating one guy named Gerald and she looked happy. The jealousy he felt whenever he saw them together was too much, it was starting to sting. So he decided to finally tell her how he truly felt.

Sarah closed her eyes, trying not to remember what transpired that night. It's been one month since that night, and since then they hadn't been on speaking terms. And it was really taking a toll on her. That night, when he confessed his feelings for her. The way he stared at her with so much intensity. She saw it, his words were so sincere, his love shone brightly in his eyes. How had she not seen it all along? She thought to herself. Her heart skipped a beat a couple of times at that. A part of her felt happy. Somewhere in her subconscious, she had always wanted him. Her body felt things she wasn't supposed to feel. Yet her lips betrayed her feelings as she spoke

“Kelvin, you're my best friend, and I love you as such. I'm dating Gerald, so please don't say this.”

"But it's the truth, I love you Sarah, I've always had. He had answered back

But she couldn't; Gerald was a nice guy, but he wasn't what she wanted. She was so confused that she didn't recognize the next words that came off her lips.

“I think we should give each other space for now. I’m with Gerald, and that's not fair to him," Sarah said, finally walking away.

Now here she was, hating the space she had asked for. One month now, and Kelvin had made no effort to contact her, but she couldn't blame him. She was the one who asked for space. She broke up with Gerald later on when she realized that she was indeed in love with Kelvin after all. However, the thought that she had pushed him away was what was eating her up.

The buzzing of her phone broke Sarah out of her thoughts. She looked around to search for her phone, only to find herself lying on it. Frantically, she reached for it and saw that she had butt-dialed Kelvin. She became tensed, pacing to and fro as her heart kept on beating fast. Her palms became sweaty as she contemplated whether to end the call or not. She was definitely not prepared to talk to him yet. The erratic beat of her heart did nothing to salvage the situation. And then he picked.

“Hello,” she started off shyly.

“Sarah,” he answered in a small whisper, his voice sounding strained.

“How are you doing? she said, the first thing that came out of her head.

"Horrible if I’m to be honest. He said in a quiet voice, and if it were possible, her heart ached for him the more.

"I love you too, she blurted out, tired of second-guessing things.

“What!" He said unsure of what he just heard

"I mean, I'm in love with you kelvin I broke up with Gerald when I realized that my life without you in it is a wreck and I'm sorry if I realized it a bit too late.” I said.

"Hold on, I’m coming over. I need you to say this to my face, he said excitedly.

Sarah laughed out loud at that.

“Alright then, you have fifteen minutes to get here," she said teasingly.
