Hello HIVE world, this post is a short story of my authorship, a metaphor about loneliness and the need for company, which sometimes come into conflict.

The castaway and the flies

On a lonely beach, God knows what island a shipwrecked man, looked off into the distance in absolute solitude.

There is nothing alive around me! -he thought to himself- just sand, stones and some lonely palm trees.

He exclaimed then:

If only a small insect or any animal came close to me, I would be convinced that I am still alive and my loneliness would not be so much!

A few hours later, two flies were fluttering around him, eager to rest on his humanity. The shipwrecked man was happy, it seemed to him a divine sign, so he let them come closer, he stood still for a while, he looked at them, he felt accompanied.

Then the flies flew away from him, soon after they returned, this time hundreds of them, fluttering insistently close to the man, tried to land on his face, before this attack, the castaway decided to move and defended himself by frightening the impertinent intruders, to finally be alone again.

No doubt he would miss two nice flies as companions, but not hundreds of them, who were only trying to serve themselves a lunch.

Sometimes we only realize our need to be sociable, when we are in overwhelming loneliness. But we defend our individuality when we are surrounded by society.

I'm at the beach right now, being invaded by lady bugs, so this story made extra sense to me :)

Thanks @amritadeva, for your comment. :)
