Jaydel's Resolution

in The Ink Well4 days ago

"Mom, it's going to be a new year in a few days; I can't wait", Jaydel said to her mom, Tori, who was checking out her jewelry box to see the ones she wanted to discard for the box to accommodate the new ones she had just bought.

" Yes, my love, I am equally waiting for the new year; remember, I will be traveling to Canada to see your father. I've missed my husband", Tori said to her daughter.

I'm not talking about that, Mom. I want to launch my brand and start earning money. It's been a long time since I had this in mind; just waiting for the new year so that I can start afresh", Jaydel replied.

"You mean, you want to work? I thought I told you, my dear, that you don't need to stress yourself; you have more than enough at your disposal. Why must you go out there and hustle like you are from a poor background? You are our only child, and we are rich; before you ask, it's already yours. Why do you have to work?" Tori said with a bit of aggression; she hated hearing the idea of working from Jaydel.

"Mom, if you aren't working, how would you have acquired all this wealth? You weren't lazy. That is why you keep flourishing, right? I don't want to be lazy too, I hate myself for depending on my parent's money. I want to earn my money that's all I ask for", Jaydel replied angrily.

"You are going to Canada with me, you don't have to start any brand here. I will establish you well there", Tori replied sternly.

"I love that, I do, but then I want the establishment here, not in Canada. So if you are going to help me financially, do that here. I want to start here, and I'm not going to Canada with you; I will come over there at my will, not compulsion", Jaydel replied.

"You are just 22 years old, Jaydel. You have beautiful years ahead of you, and look, my dear, you have rich parents; I don't want my friends to see my girl hustling like a common girl. What would they think about myself and your father?", Tori said.

"Oh! I see now, Mom. Is that your concern? Well, I'm not concerned about that at all. It's a free world; they are so free to think about whatever suits them; it's their thoughts, not mine", Jaydel replied to her mom.

"Secondly, Mom, just as you said, I am 22 years old and have more beautiful years ahead of me. I want to make hay while the sun shines. My education was fast. That's why I'm an MSC holder. Let me live my life the way I want; I don't want to live it the way you want", Jaydel further said as she angrily picked up her mobile phone and went to the backyard.

"What's wrong with this girl? Why do you have to work and tarnish my golden image when you have all you could ever need?" Tori said to herself.

"And to crown it all, I don't want any maids anymore; I want to do my cooking and cleaning myself from the new year henceforth. The maids can attend to you, but I, Jaydel, don't need them." Jaydel came back in and said to her mother, Tori, who was now closing her jewelry box after arranging.

"Are you being serious right now? Jayden, you are a princess, don't turn yourself into a slave. What's wrong with you girl? I will have to talk with your dad", Tori said.

"Don't stress, Mom. I already spoke to Dad about my plans for the new year, and he was okay with it," Jaydel said to her mother with a wink.

"That's your business; he is my husband; I know how to talk to him," Tori said, feeling uncomfortable about what Jaydel said.

The argument continues between Jaydel and Tori for days until the new year. On the first day of the new year, Jaydel decided to prepare a meal all by herself for the first time. Their cook decided to help her but Jaydel insisted on cooking by herself. She had been learning how to cook via different cooking posts on social media. She had learned quite a lot of recipes and how to prepare them. She decided to make one of her local dishes, amala (yam flour), with egusi soup (melon soup).

Fortunately, Tori had gone out that afternoon to celebrate the new year with her friends. This made Jaydel prepare the dish on her own, and that was to her satisfaction. Their cook stood with her all through the cooking process, commending her cooking. Jaydel was very happy because that was the first time she was trying to prepare food herself. After cooking, she dished a portion for the cook to taste and rate her cooking. To her amazement, the cook commended her well, she ate and kept some for her mother. Later that night, Tori requested food because she couldn't eat when she came back from the party. Immediately, Jaydel told her she cook and just to taunt her, and convince her that cooking shouldn't be what Jaydel should be doing. Tori requested the food prepared by Jaydel; she took a morsel and couldn't believe Jaydel cooked such delicious food.

"Are you sure you didn't help her?" Tori asked the cook, who was waiting for Tori's comment.

The cook nodded in agreement that she didn't help Jaydel in the cooking.

"If you can prepare this for the very first time and it's this delicious, then my baby is a good cook. Chef Jaydel to the world", Tori said with a broad smile as she continued swallowing the morsels.

Later that night, Jaydel went to her mother's room to have a discussion with her about her business, which Tori hadn't given her the go-ahead with.

"Mom, I've started my journey into becoming a new person and I need your support. Let me do this my way, Mom, and you will be proud of me. This is my New Year's resolution m", Jaydel said to her mother.

"Jaydel, you are too stubborn, and I don't like it, but if that's what you want, I will let you have your way. I hope you don't regret it", Tori replied to her daughter.

"Mom, I won't regret it. I've made the necessary arrangements that will make my business flourish just assist me financially and watch me succeed", Jaydel replied to her mom and hugged her.

"It's okay, baby. Let me know what you will need, and we will work towards achieving success together", Tori said with a smile.

Thanks for your time and your comments will be appreciated.

This was more like a debate between the mother and her child. Thank God that Jaydel was able to convinced her mother.

Yes it's cool her mother reasoned with her

Parents that stop their children from pursuing a career or doing any job at all because they are wealthy and can afford what the children need are doing themselves no good. It's good that Jaydel had way at the end. She is determined.

Her determination convinced her mother at last

I really liked how Jaydel, despite having everything in life, wanted to forge her own path and achieve what she longed for.

Thanks for sharing your story with us.

Happy New Year.

Happy new year to you

It feels good when a child is from a home where they are well to do but he still wants to work. Then, it will be unreasonable for such parent to prevent his or her child from following her dreams
