Praise's praise

"Praise, I'm yet to get money for your Waec examination, what are we going to do? I have contacted all my friends to loan me some money but they are all claiming not too buoyant this period. I don't know what to do again my dear", Mrs Adebare explained to her daughter.

"Maami (my mother), we have to look for the money, this is my final exam in secondary school and my ticket to the university. I can't afford to drop out at this level", Praise replied to her mother.

"My dear, you have to understand me, it's not my joy either. I contacted your father's younger brother, but he wasn't picking up my call", Mrs Adebare further explained.

"You don't have to contact him; they are all pretenders. They promised to be there after my father's demise, but they weren't. I don't want you contacting my father's family for anything", Praise said.

"Do I have a choice? I can't sit and watch you lose this opportunity", Mrs Adebare said with tears clouded in her eyelids.

"Don't cry, Maami (my mother); you know I don't like seeing tears on your face. Don't worry; I know we will find a means of getting the money soon before the registration closes", Praise assured her mother as she hurried out for her evening coaching classes.

"Don't come back late my dear, don't keep me waiting", Mrs Adebare shouted as Praise ran out of the house.

"God, answer my prayers on this girl; I want her to be great among her peers," Mrs. Adebare said to herself as she stood up to prepare dinner.

At exactly 7:30pm, Praise returned from her coaching classes. Mrs Adebare was sitting in the living room listening to the evening news on the radio.

"Maami(my mother), I'm back; good evening, ma. You and this evening's news are 5 and 6. You don't miss it for anything", Praise said with a smile.

"I have to listen to have the ideas of what is happening in our country and society," Mrs. Adebare replied.

"It's okay, I've heard you. Mother of the society, you didn't ask how my lesson went", Praise challenged her mother.

"Mabinu omo mi (sorry my child), how was it? I hope the teachers are all teaching you well", Mrs Adebare asked.

"They are trying their best, Mother; it's left for the student to try theirs too. Owo ni mo need bayi (money is all I need now)", Praise said to her mother as she rushed to the kitchen to pick up her food.

"Maami(my mother), I love this locust bean stew you made, it tastes really nice. Maami(my mother) is the best chef in the whole world", Praise said as she munch on the food in her mouth.

After a few weeks, the registration for the Waec examination closed, and Praise was unable to pay, which stopped her from sitting for the examination. Her friends and classmates made fun of her even though she felt pained, she didn't let that get to her. Praise's dream is to become a pharmacist. This was what she promised her dad on his sick bed and she wanted to fulfil the promise she made.

A year later, an incident happened that seems it placed Praise's life on a stop. She got pregnant and that was a devastating stage in her life. Mrs Adebare was disappointed and wished she could disown praise for causing so much shame to her. Mrs Adebare couldn't let praise be by herself because no matter what she is still her mother. This was a year she would have put in for the Waec examination after some of her friends had gained admission into the university.

Nine months later, Praise gave birth to a baby boy, and she had to work an extra year to support her mother and raise money for herself and her child's education. She registered for the WAEC and Jamb examination, which she made it through, and luckily for her, she gained admission into a higher institution, leaving her child with her mother. She studied hard for that examination, and she passed excellently well, which made the institution give her her desired course to study.

After five years she completed her education and graduated with second class upper. Seeing her dream fulfilled was the best thing in her life; even though it was delayed, she never backed down from achieving her goal. Praise was happy she fulfilled the promise she made to her late father, which was what had been on her mind throughout the time of her setback.
