"I want my mom"
"Dad, where are you?" Ben called out sobbing in an intermittent cry.
"I want my parents, help me please" said Olivia.
It was a completely normal family, they lived in a small house surrounded by gardens where the neighbors were a second family.
Olivia and Ben were the children of John and Isla who lived surrounded by affection and love always as a united family ready to be inseparable for life.
Ben was 3 years old and Olivia was 4 years old and they were the sweethearts of children, they were still in elementary school and when they left they always went to the playground to play with their parents, being a united family.
It was 1987 and as usual in primary school around
5 pm was the time for John and Isla after leaving their jobs to return home and on the way they stopped by the school to pick up their children Ben and Olivia.
At 5 pm on the 7th of January of that year, after Kings Day, something wasn't right.
It was 5 pm and Ben and Olivia were still in elementary school their parents still hadn't come to pick them up.
"Where are my parents?" Ben was saying to one of the employees, seeming to sense that something had happened.
Ben and Olivia's parents were never late, they were always on time to pick up their kids from school but this time they weren't and they didn't answer the phone.
Olivia started to shake, it was night time and she was afraid of not being with her parents.
The employees got into conversations between them but didn't say anything Ben and Olivia sensed that something had happened.
There was a lot of secrecy, the look of the employees was filled with an air of tears as they sighed looking at each other trying to figure out who could break the news to those two children.
The school was closing, there were no longer any children, only Olivia and Ben were in a corner of the courtyard looking at the street waiting to see their parents arrive.
One of the employees came to the children and took them into one of the rooms. A few minutes later, many people appeared that Ben and Olivia had never seen.
One of the people approached the two children and introduced himself in a friendly tone saying that she was a friend and that she was a psychologist she needed to talk to them but Ben and Olivia didn't even know what a psychologist.
That's when the world fell apart for these two kids, someone had to tell the kids the truth.
The children learned that their parents had had a terrible accident on the way to school and had not survived the car crash.
At this moment Olivia and Ben started screaming hugging the psychologist who tried to do her best to calm those two children.
One of the employees offered to let the children go to her house while her life, now orphans of mother and father, alone in this world, as they didn't even have familiar family members, was resolved.
The solution went through a foster family but unfortunately the host family could only adopt one of the children Olivia was the one who was adopted first and the next day another family also appeared to adopt and welcome him.
Unfortunately for the siblings, these host families did not live in the same city, one lived in the south of the country and the other lived in the opposite direction further north. The separation was inevitable.
On the day of their separation Olivia and Ben drew a huge heart on a white sheet of paper on which they wrote their names.
On the right side of the heart Ben wrote Olivia and Olivia on the left side of the heart wrote Ben.
They tore the sheet in half and the heart was in two parts.
Olivia said to Ben. "This is our heart, one day it will come together again. Look for me so that one day we can get together again, I love you."
Ben said to Olivia" I will miss you one day we will be together I will keep this part of this heart with me keep yours."
It was time for Ben to go our separate ways. They hugged each other and they both kept that heart design in their pockets forever.
Years passed, one year became two, two became five, and suddenly a decade had passed.
Olivia and Ben never saw each other again.
One day Ben's adoptive parents moved house, came more to the center of the country and ben was already close to finishing his studies at the high school where he was going.
Now he had to change schools and decided that it was time to find his sister Olivia but he didn't know how, he didn't even know where she was, he didn't have a contact or anyone talked about it.
One day at Ben's new school he had his coat pocket open and as he always walked with the part of the leaf torn from his heart that said Olivia, he lost that paper.
When he got home he was in despair I couldn't stop crying when he missed that part of the heart drawing that he kept with him for so many years.
the night was spent in the clear without sleep.
Ben got up to go to school with his head down but something gave him the strength to go and go back to school.
That day he was going to have a field trip to the old school he had frequented with his sister Olivia was something about going back to our childhood days.
Ben got on the bus and arrived at his old elementary school and noticed that the employee who had welcomed him and his sister Olivia was waiting for the bus.
When he left, he saw that this employee had something in her hand and that she was smiling at Ben.
Ben thought she was just happy to see him but what the clerk had in her hand looked like crumpled paper, it was weird.
Ben went to the employee and asked if everything was ok she with a tear in the corner of her eye gave the paper to Ben it was her paper of her half of the heart drawn that Ben had lost.
Ben looked speechless without reaction with trembling legs and hugged the employee someone had found this paper but how could he be there with the employee who had welcomed them at home and who gave him the same.
Suddenly Ben saw a bus arriving there was another class coming to visit that elementary school.
The students get out of the bus in the distance and Ben seemed to see someone familiar, something in his heart knew that was going to happen.
Olivia gets off the bus with a paper in her hand. Ben couldn't move.
"Ben" called Olivia in the distance.
"I don't believe it" said Ben
Both siblings ran to each other and hugged each other again.
That moment of love was unique the world turned the clocks to stop time in that embrace of love.
Olivia shows Ben her half of the paper with the heart and Ben already had his paper with him shows Olivia the other half and they joined the two halves together making the heart complete.
Ben knew that he had wisdom that employee who after so many years found the role of Ben when she went to his school and made that meeting possible.
But the surprises for Ben and Olivia didn't stop there. Olivia's adoptive parents had also moved and bought a house in the center of the country.
From that moment on, Ben and Olivia would study together and live close to each other.
They would never part again.
The strength of love can overcome all the tragedies of life, just believe.
just ... VERY ... VERY ... GOOD 🤩🤩
Congrats 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks my friend.
I was saddened but charmed by your story, @ricestrela. The children survive the terrible heartbreak of the loss of their parents, and move on to live full lives, re-uniting years later. The picture with the heart was a nice mechanism for showing how their bond remained strong.
As @theinkwell said, "brothers" are two boys, so you might want to change it to "siblings" in your title as well. Good luck and keep writing!
I already changed thanks for the tip.
This is a sad and beautiful story, @ricestrela. It reminds us that nothing can replace family, and when families are torn apart they always yearn to find their way back to one another.
Your story is well-told, overall. We just have a few tips for you. The word "brothers" means two boys from the same mother. You used that a few times in the story. If you change it to the word "siblings" it will be correct. That is the word for two children from the same mother, regardless of gender. Also, we have some great resources to help new writers, and those writing English in a second language, in our catalog of fiction writing tips. In particular, the Help for the Grammatically Challenged article provides helpful information on how to use Google Docs to draft your stories. It will point out errors that need to be fixed, and you can fix them by clicking on them.
Thank you for posting in The Ink Well, and for reading and supporting other community members!
