CREATIVENONFICTION#37 - MAKING A DIFFERENCE

in The Ink Well2 years ago

I believe that in life, everyone can make a difference, you just have to decide what you want to do to make a difference.

When I was in Secondary School, Mathematics was a subject I disliked because of the narrative that it is very hard to comprehend and most of all, all the mathematics teachers are always harsh.

When I started my secondary school education, mathematics was still a bit easy for me due to my previous knowledge in primary school. Our mathematics teacher is a female and she tried to groom us in the subject but she doesn't like entertaining questions, she would just prefer we should all nod our head in affirmation if she was to ask if we understand what she had taught us.

Sometimes she doesn't even ask if we understand and if a student were to ask a question, she would reply with ; "we will take that question in the next class" or "There is no time for questions, we have a lot to do". I don't know if she's overworked due to the overpopulation of students in public school or she just doesn't like explaining well.

When she went on maternity leave and another teacher substituted for her, it was a case of "falling from the frying pan and into the fire" as this man was worse in all ramifications. He comes to class with a cane, always wearing a menacing look and not teaching us to our level which made me dislike the subject even more. It continues for a while till a situation made him relax a bit but he still doesn't explain well.

I always wonder if there will be a change in the way I see the subject and in time the real change came in the form of a female teacher. She came for teaching practice ( A practical course all teachers-in-training must pass before they are certified). The first time this woman taught us "DERIVATION OF QUADRATIC FORMULA BY COMPLETING THE SQUARE", I understood so much that it lives rent-free in my brain till now. That very day, we begged her to continue teaching us even after the bell was rung for a break. She made the class so interesting that we were always looking forward to having her in our class.

It saddens us that the teaching practice only lasted for three months but in those few months she spent with us, she made use of any available time to teach us and I love the subject so much, even after she left, I continued practicing more till it became my best subject. She is one of the people who inspired me to become a teacher and I went ahead to study Mathematics in a higher Institution.

Now as a teacher, I also have students who disliked the subject and I try every day to change the narrative that Mathematics teachers are harsh or the subject is too complex. I'm glad I have been imparting positively into the lives of my students and I am always happy when they ask questions because that shows they are interested enough to want to understand better.

Even if my salary as a teacher is not encouraging, the excitement I see on the faces of my students and the praise I get from their parents as they see their children doing well in a subject they used to dislike is enough to motivate me to teach better and make a difference in their lives.

In my prayers, I always say a prayer to those who were my source of inspiration and I know students out there are doing the same for me.

Thank you all for reading.

Personally,I wish I could understand mathematics like you do.
Keep doing what you're doing, you're worthy of emulation

Thank you for the encouraging words @justiceo

You're welcome ☺️

What a beautiful story, @rukkie! most of the bad reputation of math comes from teachers who don't make the effort to make their students understand. Your story speaks very well of you as a person. Unfortunately, the teaching profession is not at the center of the interests of some governments. Let's hope that changes for the welfare and progress of these societies. It is a great satisfaction to make a difference.

Thank you so much for your kind words @theinkwell

A passion for one of the most disliked jobs because of a good influence....
Touching 😖

Thank you so much for coming around.

So you're teaching Mathematics now? In high school, Mathematics was one of the most complex subjects, but I realized that Science is the worst. It's a good thing that Math is one of my loved subjects, but it was too hard since we're always in conflict (yk what I mean lol).

Hahaha I know right.

I'm glad you were able to drop by.

Muy interesante la lectura que acabo de tener, exitos en todo lo que hagas.

Gracias amigo.

Oh, I came in for the second time, but this time from #dreemport because I am a #dreemerforlife.

I admire how you are determined to make a difference in the lives of the people you tech, it's such a beautiful thing to impact knowledge to people.

Thank you for that.

Thank you for your encouraging words sis

Wow, so you are a mathematics teacher. That's interesting.

Mathematics is one of the subjects many students do not like because of the mindset they have towards the subject and the teachers aren't helping matters. They go about frowning and it doesn't help matters.

With your experience, you will definitely know how things work and make a difference for students who have a negative mindset towards the subject.

Came in front dreemport.

awwwww.
truly anyone can make a different and change. I remembered in both junior and senior secondary school. I never understand any subject i was thought and i had no interest in it until after i finished my school. My brained opened at a jamb lesson and it was like all the things i was taught before came back and it got to a time i was taking jamb class for my mate and the man who help open up my brain was mr bayo, he was so good at teaching i understood everything he taught me. God will continue to bless him for me.

#dreemport

God bless Mr Bayo and every other teacher out there who are striving to impart positively into the lives of others.

Thank you for stopping by .

amen oooo

I went ahead to study Mathematics in a higher Institution.

Wow @rukkie my respect for you just increased, maths and me can never co-exist!, never!

I see Y’all maths lovers as the Albert Einsteins of our time.

Always a #dreemerforlife

😃😃😃😃 Albert Einstein bawo.

Thank you so much for the kind words sis

You are most welcome😄

I always had a disagreement with mathematics mostly because of the poor lessons from teachers. I do understand the feeling that comes with making an impact. You’re doing great babes.

#Dreemerforlife

Asin if not for that teacher in my life, I wouldn't have been inspired myself.

Thank you so much for coming around.

Who doesn't hate mathematics at one point in secondary school?? I was one of them till one very Mr Eze taught us step by step! I'm happy that the female teacher inspired you to become a mathematician and a teacher today. You have a greater pattern of explaining words and thoughts in detail. #dreemerforlife #dreemport

Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm so happy that Mr Eze was able to make a impart positively in you.

Thanks for stopping by.
