My best support system

Greetings!

The challenges of life would not stop knocking the door of one's life in as much as man exists and even wants the good things of life.

Since my childhood up till this present moment, I have seriously experienced a series of challenges which has culminated into giving me experiences. No wonder there's a saying in my area which says “ the experience of life would not kill, but added wisdom to one's life.” So with this, I have really garnered enough wisdom via my challenges in life.

Growing up with my parents was full of challenges and the most challenging time of my growing up was in my secondary school days. Though my parents, most especially my mum, was not an educated person, her quest for sound education would not even allow her to neglect me and my educational pursuit. No wonder she once said:

“Sam, I will see you through your educational pursuit, even if taking a loan would be the only option, I would make sure I see you through.”

When she said this, I was so happy for the assurance she gave to me and I counted myself lucky to have such an amazing and supportive woman as my mum. So, I replied her by saying:

“And I would not let you down, I promised.” “I trust you Sam,”she replied.

So, this was how the journey started and she's always faithful to her promises to me, particularly on my educational pursuit, less I forget, she's only a petty trader and even with her petty business, she was able to join cooperative society just to fund my education. Not only this, she was also into daily contributions all because of me and my younger brother. There's a day, I told her,

“ Mum, I want you to stop stressing yourself this much.” But her response to my statement was,” Sam, I cannot stop or betray my promises to you and your brother, you both are my future” she said.

Though I love her courage, I am not satisfied with the stress and pain she was going through, but she's the kind that would not even give up like that. One day she fell sick. On that particular day, she still went to hawk the petty things she's selling.

“Mum, why are you doing this to yourself after I have told you not to go out in the morning.” But she responded by saying, “Sam, I have a contribution to make tomorrow and I cannot afford to miss it.” Haa, “is that why you should now kill yourself,” I said. “Don't worry I would be fine Sam” was her response when she parted with me at my back.

But thank God she's able to overcome the illness and later bounced back to her full strength after the illness. I was happy seeing her on her feet again.

“Sam, I told you I would be fine, can you now see?” She said, when i heard this from her, i felt encouraged with her words and I also promised her again that:

“ I will not let you down, I promised.” When I said this, she's happy and smiled at me.

So, after her coming back to life, I advised her to take things easy as she's the only one we're looking up to. So, she agreed to my advice and ever since then, she has always taken things easy.

So, this was how we've been doing it till I sat for my SSCE exam which I passed with flying colors. I could remember the day I brought her the result, she was full of praise and she treated my brother and I to a sumptuous meal.

“What would you like to eat?” She asked, and I said, “ anything goes.” She then prepared us pounded yam with egusi soup and that night was a night to forget as we all enjoyed ourselves.

After that, I obtained my jamb form and did well in the exam and that's how I got admitted into my school of choice to study my course of choice which is civil engineering. Thank God I made her proud. Though, my university education was tough because of the finances attached to it, but my mum said,

“Sam, don't worry, I will double my effort to fulfill my promises for you.” and like a dream, I started and ended my university educational pursuit with good grades.

On the day of my convocation, my mum and I were together with my younger brother. We were all jubilating for the success of my academic pursuit at the university and it's during the celebration that I promised to pay her back and to the glory of God, I have been able to fulfill part of my promises to her. Though not all, I have done part and I will do the rest.

Thanks for reading.

This is such a touching and inspiring story, Sam. Your mum’s resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering love truly shine through. She’s a real hero, and you’ve made her proud by staying true to your promise. May you continue to succeed and bring her even more joy!

Amen, thanks for stopping by

Thank you for this lovely tribute to your mother. As you describe her, she reminds me of my own mother. That's great writing, when you can bring a character 'home' to the reader.

I wish you great success in the future, not only so you can repay your mother, but also so that her heart can swell with pride.

Yes ooo, thanks for stopping by
