Strange Encounter

in The Ink Well2 years ago

It's Monday…

The alarm clock rings loudly, waking me up from my slumber.

I fumble on the bedside table with my eyes shut trying to switch off the persistent alarm clock.

My fingers brush the cold metal of the heavy object and soon find the smooth power button which I immediately press and hold, silence ensuing immediately.

I heave a sigh as my hand falls back to the bed with a muffled thud.

If it'd been the weekend or one of those days I was without a job, I'd have drifted off almost immediately.

But, it's not the weekend and I am not jobless anymore.

I am to resume work for the first time in two years today and I am scared to death.

"Honey, you shouldn't be scared. It's because you've been cooped up all on your own and now Fate says it's time to get out into the world," Mother had told me.

I had nodded my head several times though I knew deep down that it was more complicated than that.

Though my relationship with Dan ended months before I lost my job, the aftereffects of those sad events have managed to dull the beauty of getting a job that I dreamed of. A job I'd have missed if Mother didn't force me to come out of my hole of sadness (dug by yours truly) and apply for the job which I eventually got.

Now, I have to face my fear of rejection and show up for work.

If someone were to look at me right now, they'd see a young lady getting ready for work like any normal person but inside me is chaos.

I get ready for work regardless. Mother has so much faith in me for me to get cold feet and resign before I even resume.

Taking a very long look at myself in the mirror, plus several deep breaths, I walk out the door hoping that I get infected with some of Mother's confidence.

"Good Morning!" The cab driver hails as he pulls to a stop for me to enter.

My eyes open wide as my thoughts scatter and I struggle to grab a hold of them. I'm not used to getting greetings from strangers.

It's like a jolt to the system.

"Oh, uh.. thank you. I mean, good morning," I clear my throat.

"You're welcome! Where are you headed?" He asks me.

"Vitcom Holdings, please," I reply.

"Ahh…I am sure you'll have a great day today at work," he says suddenly while smiling at me in the rear view mirror.

Why is this stranger nice to me?

I can't help but ponder.

But I can't help it, I return his smile.

"Thank you," I mutter.

After a long moment, I confess.

"It's my first day actually,"

His smile increased.

"That's great news. The company just got blessed."

A bubbly laugh slips from my lips, surprising me.

"You just wait, you'll be the best employee they ever had," his brown eyes twinkled.

"You're so kind. Thank you so much," I say to him.

He smiles and nods as he drives through traffic.

Suddenly I feel lighter, better. A heavy weight has been lifted off my heart and this time as I walk through the doors of Vitcom Holdings, I feel confident for the first time in two years.

Real, genuine confidence.

The cab driver was right.

I will have the best day today.

What a heartwarming story! Sometimes fear and self doubt stop many of us from reaching our full potential. All your protagonist needed was a push from a loved one and of course, a kindness from a stranger! I never underestimate encounters like this. 😄 Beautifully written! !LUV

Encounters such as this are always the best encounters one can have in a lifetime.
Thank you for reading. 😇

Sometimes, all we need is a little push with encouragement and kindness from someone to lift our spirit up. The protagonist's mother and the driver did justice to that and made her day amazing.
Such a lovely story from you.

You have said it all.
Thank you for reading.

Hmmm, this is sweet. This is very relatable, the driver unexpectedly did a great job with boosting her confidence.

He did. Thank you for reading.

I love what the cab driver did; he infected you with his pleasantness.
A little kindness goes a long way

Amazing story @stellageorge

It really does.
I'm glad you enjoyed my story.
Thank you for reading.

There was a reason she got into that cab in particular.
She needed the boost of confidence that the driver had given her.

I would have wondered the same thing though. Why was a complete stranger being nice to me?

Without a doubt, I'm sure she had the best day and we just have to be grateful for mothers. They are the absolute best.

Some people are usually kind to others, it's their nature.
Thank you for reading.

Great dialogue and character development throughout your story. It's common for one to lose confidence after being unemployed for an extended period, combined with other influences. Encounters with strangers can be positive, as we saw with the encouraging words from the taxi driver.
Thanks for sharing this with us, and do remember to engage with other authors.

Thank you so much for reading.
I'll do so. 😇

Awwwn! Seems the driver was sent by God...angel.
Maybe he has wings there were invisibly hidden 🥰.

Nice write up👌

Maybe he did.
Thank you for your feedback. 😇
