It was this day on Friday in the city of Ilorin where the weather condition was so hot and filled with the smell of roasted corn done by the streets. Not only that, it was also filled with lots of horns coming from cars who were expressing their frustration due to the road traffic.
Jide, who is a Data Analyst, is a young Nigerian guy who is brilliant. He was standing in the queue at the filling station. From his appearance, you can actually tell he was already so tired and frustrated due to the long queue, but at the same time, he can't afford to take the risk.
He can't afford to take the risk of staying at the door of his house all day long without fuel to power his generator because he will definitely be in need of the generator for his online skill work to attend to clients.
It was a week where the fuel scarcity was severe and the effect was spread to everyone on the street. In fact, you can see lots of cars also queuing at the filling station apart from lots of people holding jerricans and kegs to get fuel even though the price was at a very high rate.
Jide, standing in the queue all day long, suddenly took a glance at the attendant at the filling station. You can also see from the facial expressions of the filling station attendant that he was stressed out. Checking his phone, a Range Rover drove into the filling station, passed the long queue line and instantly made his line forward, jumping the long queue.
The door of the range rover opened the door and a man with a white agbada came out looking so sharp and shining bright. He walks majestically to the attendant. Of course, in a typical Nigerian environment, there were silent talks underground but nobody had the confidence to raise their voice vocally.
Jide, feeling frustrated by all the displays from the man, shouted. "Mr man, the queue is at the back here!"
The man in the white agbada turns to look at who is talking behind him.
"And who are you to tell me that statement?" The man responded back to Jide.
Jide heart begins to beat rapidly, but he is determined he will not take his words back. "I am Jide, someone who has been in this queue for more than 2 hours, just like everyone in this queue also". Jide responded.
"You can not just come from anywhere and just skip the queue and the people on the line because you came with a Range Rover ". Jide added.
There was also a woman from Jide who was able to raise her voice. "Yes! This young man is right. I don't care about the car you brought, but you are not better than us. The woman responded.
"Hey, the line is back here." Jide refers to the man with white agbada.
What was said got the man in the white agbada so angry. Looking at the attendant with so much arrogance.
"Hey you there, do you know who I am" the man was talking to the attendant.
"Mr Man, we did not care who you are and we did not want to care. Like I said, the line is back here!". Jide responded trying to humble the man in the white agbada.
The murmur in the queue gets so louder that the man in the white agbada is not able to resist it any longer. There were a lot of people with angry faces also expressing their frustration towards the man.
Seeing that everyone was displeased with his action, the man in white Agbada returned back to his Ranger Rover car with shame and disappointment that he was not able to have his way. He drove right out of the filling station.
"That was very nice of you young man." A man from the queue applauded Jide for his actions and Jide smiled with so much confidence and Fulfilment. It was a victory from his side.
We need people like Jide in our community. The rate of injustice and perversion of the law is too much. We need to be vocal.
I like the story.
